The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today unveiled the first-ever series hydraulic hybrid diesel urban delivery vehicle, which will provide dramatic improvements in fuel economy and in emission reductions. The development of the hydraulic hybrid is the result of a partnership between the EPA, U.S. Army, UPS, International Truck and Engine Corporation and Eaton Corporation.

UPS and GLS top German CEP sales ranking

UPS and GLS have been rated the best CEP operators in Germany in an in-depth survey of sales performance. Hermes and Trans-o-flex came bottom of the list of seven leading carriers which also included DHL, DPD and TNT. The survey by Wiesbaden-based consultancy Marketing Partner compared and evaluated the carriers’ entire offer process from initial customer contact, advice and offer through to reliable timing and the length of the whole offer phase. The survey was based on a concrete enquiry for a complex logistics outsourcing contract involving more than 50,000 shipments per year.

Delivery companies are consolidating

“WE ARE competing with giants,” says Fadi Ghandour. The Jordanian businessman has first-hand experience of consolidation in the logistics business. He is chief executive of ARAMEX International, which began life as the Middle East partner of a number of American delivery companies. Partnerships and alliances allow operators to link with others to provide services in places where they have no operations of their own. All went well until 2003, when DHL bought Airborne Express, ARAMEX’s chief partner in America. The deal gave DHL a way to compete in the backyard of UPS and FedEx. But for ARAMEX it meant its link to the crucial American market was cut.

Buying TNT

ith new takeover rumors swirling around TNT, the company did its part to satisfy the chatter, although hardly on the scale that has TNT’s name making the rounds on the mergers and acquisitions market. The Netherlands-based express, mail and logistics giant added two highly targeted postal businesses to its TNT Post operation, shoring up its outlook for the direction of the European distribution and delivery market.

But the additions of Italy’s TMW Italia and British courier JD Williams to the mail operation still left TNT with at least one far larger transaction in its business plan still undone.

USPS should give up first-class monopoly

The Pantagraph editorial “No stamp of approval for proposed increases” (June 1) spells out the many “flaws” in the entire United States Postal Service system.

The monopoly on first-class mail granted the USPS many, many years ago was necessary to ensure this service was made available to everyone equally. Those days are long gone. The need for this gigantic money loser no longer exists, thanks to the superior job being done by UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, etc. They offer delivery to every address in the United Sates daily – as well as literally worldwide. Given the opportunity, they would certainly be able to use their expertise in taking on first-class and parcel post. And competition would keep the rates down, while keeping levels of service up.
