UK Royal Mail seeks alliance with American parcel giant

Two of the world’s biggest postal groups, Fedex Corporation and UPS, are in advanced negotiations to set up a groundbreaking European strategic alliance with Royal Mail. Allan Leighton, chairman of Royal Mail, is still deciding which of the two potential American-owned partners to pick but it is thought he is close to creating a new company that could transform the financial prospects of the British mail group. Leighton did not reveal the talks with the two US postal giants — Fedex, which is capitalised at USD33 billion (GBP17.5 billion), and UPS, worth USD52 billion. He wants the European operations of Fedex or UPS to team up with Royal Mail’s General Logistics Systems. GLS runs a pan-European parcels business and is Royal Mail’s most profitable operation.

China to become sixth largest express market by 2010

The US express and delivery market is the largest in the world, although that of Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing globally. What’s more, China, the fastest growing market in the Asia-Pacific express and parcels delivery sector, is set to become the sixth largest express market in the world by 2010, provided it continues growing at an average of 20% per year.

Volumes push UPS to expand US air hub

UPS is to invest at least Dollars 1bn in an expansion of its main air hub in Louisville, Kentucky, highlighting rapid growth in express delivery services.
Mike Eskew, UPS chief executive, said the investment was necessary to cope with the surge in parcel volumes generated by increased global trade. Express delivery companies have been taking an increasingly important role in the global economyas manufacturers and retailers shift towards super-efficient “just-in-time” supply chains. “We anticipate strong growth in global trade to continue for years to come,” said Mr Eskew.

UPS plans to increase the sorting capacity of its Louisville hub by 60 per cent to 487,000 packages an hour by 2010, with work beginning later this year.

UPS plans USD1 billion expansion

Kentucky’s largest corporate employer, United Parcel Service, will announce today a USD1 billion expansion of its Louisville airport operations that will create thousands of new jobs, Gov. Ernie Fletcher’s office said yesterday.
Brett Hall, a Fletcher spokesman, confirmed the shipping company plans to add more than 4,000 full- and part-time jobs as part of a wide-ranging expansion. Construction of the expanded facility is expected to begin later this year and be completed by 2010. UPS spokesman Mark Giuffre would not confirm the report from Fletcher’s office, but he said UPS will hold a news conference at a company hangar at 11 am today. “We have an announcement tomorrow, but I can’t confirm anything today,” Giuffre said.

CEO survey names UPS America's top brand

Shipping giant United Parcel Service has been named the country’s top business brand in the American Brand Excellence Awards 2006. FedEx also was named a top brand. Both Atlanta-based UPS and Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx compete with Plantation-based DHL in the package shipping business. Respondents said they ranked UPS highly for being an industry leader, forward-thinking, easy to use, ethical, popular and a growing company.
