Hungarian customers demand more complex delivery solutions

Though competition has intensified, the delivery volume of international parcel services has increased in recent years, industry experts said last week. Customers, however, are requiring complex, more sophisticated services, and service providers are expected to move to meet these requirements. “Though the core business is still small parcel delivery, no international delivery company can survive on the exclusive provision of traditional courier service-type solutions,” said Zoltán Bándli, business development manager at UPS Hungary Kft. According to Bándli, customers want more – something along the lines of a one-stop service.

Renewed thrust for DHL: delivery firm says it has fixed infrastructure and will attack UPS-FedEx duopoly anew

The challenger came on strong last year with a splashy, USD150 million ad blitz that portrayed its bright yellow fleet as a reliable alternative to UPS and FedEx. DHL, long the dominant small-package carrier outside the United States, was determined to break into the domestic duopoly of UPS and FedEx which, together, control 80 percent of deliveries in the world’s largest market. It’s been a bumpy road so far. A series of breakdowns in DHL’s domestic delivery network stranded huge numbers of US packages last fall, lowered on-time deliveries to levels company officials called “totally unacceptable” and cost UD280 million in lost revenue. Now, with its infrastructure problems apparently fixed, DHL plans another major ad campaign during the Winter Olympics aimed at wresting market share from its American rivals. “Our strategy going forward is totally unchanged, and it’s beginning to bear fruit,” said John Pearson, DHL’s executive vice president. “We’re challenging the duopoly here with a flexible, responsive and more human approach – and the reaction from customers has been very favorable.”

UPS completes expansion of European air hub

After two and half years of construction, UPS has opened a greatly expanded, more automated package sorting hub in Europe that will accommodate the shipping needs of its growing customer base for years to come. The expanded facility, located at the Cologne/Bonn Airport, almost doubles the original hub’s sorting capacity to 110,000 packages per hour, or more than 30 packages per second. Much of that increase in speed has been accomplished through the deployment of new automation technology, making the hub the most advanced as well as the largest facility of its type in Europe. “UPS continues to experience strong growth in Europe and this facility will ensure we are able to provide our customers with reliable, global distribution solutions,” said Wolfgang Flick, president, UPS Europe. “The investment is part of a long-term strategy to help customers compete and succeed in the key trading lanes within Europe and linking Europe to North America and Asia.”
