UPS forging stronger links in the UK

Express giant UPS has signed an agreement to acquire UK parcel carrier Lynx Express. This move should not only help strengthen the US company’s capabilities in one of the most dynamic and fragmented parcel markets in Europe, but could signal a move towards further consolidation within the UK market.

UPS disclosed that it would acquire Lynx Express for USD96.5 million and expects to complete the transaction in the second half of 2005. UPS CEO Mike Eskew implied in an interview that the Lynx Express brand may be folded into UPS. This would not be surprising as UPS’s business model is based on rolling out a standard proposition in every country it has a presence in, albeit with some regional differences, giving its operations a strong and globally recognized brand.

UPS eyes a UK-based acquisition

United Parcel Service is poised to make an acquisition in the UK, strengthening the US company’s position in one of Europe’s most fragmented package delivery markets. People familiar with UPS said the medium-sized deal could be announced as early as today, although they would not identify the British company involved. UPS declined to comment. The planned acquisition is believed to be in the package delivery sector, ruling out Exel, the large UK logistics group that has been linked with a takeover by UPS this year. The most likely candidates are all privately-owned companies, including ANC and Lynx Express.

China volumes aid UPS results

A doubling in shipments out of China helped UPS increase earnings by a better than expected 22 per cent in the second quarter. Rapid international expansion, especially in Asia, has helped the package delivery and logistics group offset slower growth in the US over recent months. But there were signs in the second quarter that the domestic business was recovering strength, following management restructuring and an increased focus on medium-sized business customers. International export volume rose 18 per cent, helped by “steady” growth in the world economy. Asian exports were up nearly 40 per cent. This month the group announced plans to launch a domestic express delivery service in China and build a new hub for Asian operations in Shangahi.
