UPS pilots may vote to strike

The union representing 2,500 pilots at United Parcel Service Inc. has called for a vote to authorize a strike that could severely cripple the nation’s largest carrier. UPS handles an average 13.6 million packages a day. According to the Wall Street Journal, results of the strike vote are expected in mid-May. UPS pilots have been without a contract for two years. Even if a strike is authorized, it would be unlikely in the near term. For one thing, eight months ago, the union invited federal mediation. It can’t legally strike as long as mediation continues. For another, President Bush could step in to block a strike temporarily.

CEO of UK’s BT Group Elected to UPS Board

The Board of Directors of UPS today announced it had elected the chief executive of BT Group plc, Ben Verwaayen, as a new independent non-executive director of the company. Verwaayen, 53, will serve the balance of a term that expires in May of this year and will stand for re-election at the UPS annual shareowners meeting on May 5. “We are excited to add to our board an executive who brings such a strong international perspective,” said Mike Eskew, chairman and CEO of UPS. “We also will benefit greatly from Ben’s knowledge and experience in telecommunications and technology.”

The battle for parcel supremacy

Whenever David Abney looks up from his desk on the executive floor of United Parcel Service’s headquarters in Atlanta, he sees a large map of China mounted on the wall. “I have it right in my line of sight,” he says. “It reminds me and visitors to my office of the size of the place and the opportunity it provides for us.”

As president of the package delivery company’s international business, Mr Abney is quick to stress that Europe, South America and the rest of Asia are also important markets. But the fact that only China is granted its own map shows where his priorities lie.

“China is the largest and most exciting opportunity in the 30 years I’ve been with UPS,” he says. “It’s not a case of ‘should we’ or ‘can we’. If you’re going to be a global company in future you absolutely have to be a player in China.”

Over the past few months, UPS has committed an additional $600m of investment in China as it vies with rivals FedEx, DHL and TNT for leadership of the market.

UPS vs. Polish Post – new law interpretation

Three years ago the Postal and Telecommunication Regulation Office (URTiP) conducted an inspection of the UPS courier company and found several packages weighing less than 2 kilograms. Since this type of parcel is classified as a letter, the first instance court decided that UPS had broken the terms of its permit (only the Polish Post (PP) can deliver such parcels). UPS appealed, stating that as their services are not available to the general public and only to big contractors, no transgression had taken place. Yesterday, Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court ruled that the URTiP was wrong. Nonetheless, PP will have a monopoly on several services. Postal services available to the general public have been reinterpreted, as have also terms such as “letter” and “package”. The URTiP has the right to inspect the content of parcels, so it is possible more changes will take place in the interpretations.

New package-flow technology not delivering at UPS

United Parcel Service Inc. has acknowledged that its highly touted package-flow technology isn’t flowing as smoothly as expected, with problems at about a third of the 300 or so centers where it has been implemented.
The package-flow software suite, a UPS initiative unveiled in October 2003, was developed in-house to help the company more efficiently plan deliveries made by its drivers in the U.S. At that time, UPS said it would deploy the technology at its 1,000 U.S. hubs by 2005 (see story). However, now it seems that full implementation won’t be achieved until the end of 2007, said UPS spokeswoman Donna Barrett.
