Winestock to succeed Darden in directing UPS’s US operations

UPS today announced changes in its top management, including the upcoming retirement of the executive responsible for all package operations in the United States. Cal Darden, for the past seven years the senior vice president of US operations and a member of the UPS Board of Directors since 2001, will retire in early 2005 after a 33-year career with UPS. UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew announced Darden would be succeeded by Jim Winestock, currently the manager of UPS’s North Central Region. That region includes six states in America’s heartland with 244 facilities and more than 51,000 employees. In succeeding Darden, Winestock will join the UPS Management Committee, which directs the day-to-day management of the company.

Multinational express companies aim at Shanghai

Latest Customs’ statistics show that Shanghai has become an air express (AXPS) hub in China, and even in Asia and the Pacific region. Multinational express companies are one after another increasing their investment and shifting their regional business focus to Shanghai.

Shanghai is an aviation hub port and a leading city in the development of the Yangtze River Delta area. Since this year, the amount of both inbound and outbound express delivery handled by Shanghai Port has grown over 50 percent over the same period of 2003, and the port even ranked first in China in terms of amount of air express handled, which had reached 8 million pieces by the end of September this year.

The world’s largest express operator, UPS of the United States, after shifting its Grand-China-Area headquarter from Hong Kong to Shanghai, plans to construct an Asia-Pacific area transshipment center in Shanghai, and then centering on Shanghai, to develop international through express business in Qingdao, Guangzhou and Xiamen. Several other international express giants, including DHL and TNT, are also planning such operation system in China.

More UPS freight forwarding buys possible – CFO

United Parcel Service Inc. Chief Financial Officer Scott Davis said on Wednesday future acquisitions in the freight forwarding arena are possible in coming years. Davis said on a Webcast of a transportation conference held by Citigroup’s Smith Barney unit that UPS was always looking to fortify its network by, for example, adding domestic freight forwarding capacity in the United States.

UPS Launches New Flights to China

UPS this week began the first of 12 new flights to China with MD-11 service to Shanghai. The new flights will triple the current service from six to 18 flights a week and comes on the heels of UPS’s impressive 129% growth in China export volume in the third quarter. “Thanks to these flights, we are moving ahead of customer demand with even greater access to the world’s fastest growing economy,” said David Abney, president, UPS International. “China is probably the most exciting business opportunity in a generation and our growth numbers from the country show that customers are turning to UPS for the efficiency and reliability of its worldwide network.”

Russian express market share / volume

In Russia DHL has been working since 1984. Now it has 100 its own and agent offices in the territory of the country. Turnover of the company in Russia is not disclosed. According to the Russian division of DHL, in 2004 it will transport 3.2 million cargoes including 60% inside of the country. According to Post of Russia, the market of Russian express delivery market is estimated at $200-250 million (some market players estimate it at $500 million), $150 million of this sum being international delivery more than 70% of which is controlled by the “big four”: DHL -45% (DHL estimates its share at 57%), UPS and TNT- 15% each and FedEx – about 4%. In domestic delivery market significant market shares belong to Pony Express and SPSR Express.
