The dispute between DHL, the express delivery service owned by Deutsche Post, the German postal service, and its US competitors FedEx and UPS has intensified. UPS and FedEx have accused DHL of having exclusive agreements with two US airlines, Astar and ABX Air, and of controlling these two airlines. However, the two US delivery companies have now been accused of hypocrisy by those in the sector, who claim that their practices in Europe mirror those of DHL in the US: UPS has an exclusive agreement with Danish airline Star Air, while FedEx controls the German airline Express Airways.

Air Express carriers urge China to further liberalise postal services

The Asian chief executives of the world’s top four air express carriers are to meet in Beijing to show their commitment to the Chinese market and to call for further liberalisation of the country’s express mail services.

During their first ever joint visit to China, the Asian division leaders of DHL, FedEx Corp, United Parcel Service Inc and TNT Express will talk to top Chinese officials, including the Vice-Minister of Commerce Liao Xiaoqi, the executive director of the Conference of Asia Pacific Express Carriers (CAPEC), Ira Wolf, said.

All four are members of CAPEC.

China's draft postal law triggers protest from foreign deliverers

The amended draft of China’s Postal Law has triggered strong protests from foreign and local private mail delivery companies, and three industry associations have jointly submitted a complaint to China’s legislature.

The draft law version, which came out on November 17, bans overseas and private express mail delivery companies from delivering mail under 500g, and authorizes China Post to decide whether to offer mail delivery business licenses to its competitors.

A small subsidiary of UPS is making a big impact on behalf of its customers through the deployment of computer software that allows exquisitely precise planning of delivery routes.

The software, known as the Roadnet™ Transportation Suite, is offered by UPS Logistics Technologies and is being used by grocery stores, beverage bottlers and snack food companies, among others, to shave miles off their delivery networks.
