International boosts UPS earnings

Net income at United Parcel Service jumped 28% in the third quarter to $739 million, up from $578 million a year ago. Revenue was up 7.2% to $8.3 billion, compared with $7.8 billion.

The Atlanta-based logistics provider attributed the gains to a strengthening U.S. package business and record performances by its international and non-package businesses, as well as the sale of its aviation technology business and a favorable tax ruling.

UPS posts strong earnings gain on growth across all segments

UPS has reported a 28% jump in net income for the third quarter thanks to a strengthening U.S. package business, record performances by both the international and non-package segments and two other modest gains.

Earnings per diluted share increased 27% to US$0.65 from US$0.51 last year, including gains due to the sale of a business unit and a favorable tax ruling. Without these items, earnings per diluted share were US$0.62, up 22% compared to the prior year.

Deutsche Post asks EU to look into Astar dispute

Deutsche Post has said its asked the European Commission to look into whether U.S. rivals were being given the same treatment in Europe as it was in the U.S., though it has lodged no formal complaint.

A Post DPWGn.DE spokesman said the company had asked EU Commissioner Loyola de Palacio to investigate whether a partnership between U.S. rival UPS and Danish airline Star Air was comparable to that between its own DHL unit and U.S. airline partner Astar.

UPS, FedEx urge US to drop Astar deadline

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service on Monday asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to lift the Dec. 1 deadline for an administrative law judge’s recommendations on the ownership of Astar Air Cargo, formerly DHL Airways. The big U.S. express carriers complained that two U.S.-based subsidiaries of archrival Deutsche Post World Net have failed to comply with the judge’s order to produce documents related to the investigation into whether Astar is illegally controlled by Deutsche Post.
