Irish express players broaden horizons

New PacTrac research data into the Irish parcels and express market shows how European postal operators are increasing their share of both the international and domestic sectors. On the domestic front, of the estimated 6.9m parcels despatched annually by Irish international parcels and express shippers, the domestic post office brands (An Post & SDS) feature predictably strongly, together accounting for 47%. Internationally, of the estimated 1.8m express parcels dispatched annually, just seven brands make up 82% of the market, with DHL (26%) leading the way.

Deutsche Post fails to appease UPS

US-based United Parcel Service (UPS), the world’s largest express forwarding group, is still refusing to withdraw its legal complaint against Deutsche Post, the German postal and logistics group, on grounds of unfair competition, in spite of the announcement by the German company that it is to sell its shares in US airline DHL Airways, which is to be renamed Astar Air Cargo by its new owners.

UPS and Fedex set to pounce on DHL court filing

DHL Airways will clarify its ownership and operational structure in a filing today with the Department of Transportation. Opponents FedEx and United Parcel Service expect to use the filing to bolster their case that the air carrier is controlled by German distribution group, Deutsche Post. The documents were ordered by Ronnie Yoder, the DoT’s chief administrative law judge, in a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. Judge Yoder is proceeding with a public hearing on August 19 to determine if DHL Airways, based in Miami, violates US laws limiting foreign ownership and control of US carriers.
