Consultative Committee set for a second term

Charles Prescott, Chairman of the Direct Marketing Association in the United States, has been re-elected as head of the UPU’s Consultative Committee. Murray Buchanan, International Development Director with Royal Mail, will assume the vice-chairmanship. This committee, which was created at the 2004 Bucharest Congress, is mandated to represent the interests of the postal sector in the wider sense, and to act as a framework for effective dialogue between postal sector partners.

The CC is made up of 19 non-governmental organizations representing customers, delivery service providers, organizations of workers, suppliers of goods and services to the postal sector, and similar organizations of individuals and companies with an interest in international postal services.

Knowing that they can breathe new life into the organization by representing the point of view of customers/suppliers, the members of the CC wish to play an increasingly important role in areas such as support for postal reform, the environment and sustainable development, the universal postal service and postal security.

They have contributed to the development of the new Nairobi Postal Strategy, and will play an active part in its implementation, along with governments, designated postal operators and the Restricted Unions.

FedEx Ground names Entrepreneurs of the Year (USA)

FedEx Ground recognized three small business owners with one of the company’s highest honors for independent contractors. Keith Herzig of Hartford, Conn., Sunil K. Patel of Philadelphia and Raymond Skiptunis of Trenton, N.J., were named FedEx Ground Entrepreneurs of the Year at a banquet recognizing them for their business development, customer service results, safety record, and community support.
The FedEx Ground Entrepreneur of the Year honor was established in 2007 to pay tribute to those independent contractors who have built businesses that most consistently go the extra mile to safely deliver superior customer service, help fellow independent contractors succeed, and support their local communities. Of the more than 13,000 independent contractors supporting the FedEx Ground network, Herzig, Patel and Skiptunis were recognized for best exemplifying these traits in 2007-2008.
Since the founding of the Entrepreneur of the Year program, FedEx Ground has named 140 regional honorees. Herzig, Patel and Skiptunis were selected from a group of 20 finalists from this year’s regional winners.

UPS looks to China for M&A

United Parcel Service hopes to buy a firm in China and boost staff there in coming years.

UPS, a bellwether of the U.S. economy along with rival FedEx Corp, last month posted earnings in line with expectations but hit by rising fuel costs and a weak economy.

Trying to drive growth beyond a U.S. market that accounts for more than half its revenue, UPS will be opening two USD 180 million transport hubs in China and wants to nearly quadruple its staffing there in the next few years, hoping to serve growing demand for delivery services within a relatively untapped market.

“U.S. consumers are not buying, but I think the great opportunity for us internationally is business that never touches U.S. shores,” Dan Brutto, the president of the company’s international business, told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

UPS has doubled its headcount in China over the past 18 months to around 5,300, but expects that number to increase by at least 1,000 annually over the next 3-4 years, said Brutto.

It’s now looking for acquisitions within the world’s fourth largest economy, despite fears that Chinese growth will taper off over 2008 and 2009.

“You could say UPS China should really have 25,000 employees. The business is out there,” Brutto said.

TNT NV 'deal' could trigger antitrust review for UPS

United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) would likely face antitrust scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic if its reported interest in Dutch rival TNT NV turns into a fully-fledged deal.

TNT shares rose on weekend media reports of renewed interest from UPS which, like smaller U.S. rival FedEx Corp., has courted the logistics and mail specialist several times in recent years.

Both U.S. companies prize TNT’s express delivery business in Europe and expanding Asian presence to counter a slowdown in their domestic activities.

Adding the 8 pct share of the European Union express delivery market held by UPS to the sector-leading 17 pct held by TNT would reach a level that normally triggers interest from competition officials at the European Commission. FedEx has a market share of just 2 pct in the EU.

Interest from the U.S. rivals has in the past faltered on valuation and the future of TNT’s domestic-focused mail division, which accounted for EUR4.3 billion of its EUR11.5 billion group sales last year.

Scott Davis, UPS chief executive, last month declined comment on any specific interest in TNT, though his remarks on its acquisition priorities indicate the Dutch group remains a potential fit.

TNT Chief Executive Peter Bakker said last month that the company could continue its independent strategy, but UPS was linked with the Dutch group again at the weekend. A report in the London-based Sunday Telegraph that said both sides had hired advisers.
Its shares later declined Monday after a UPS executive told Reuters any deal would hit the U.S. group’s valuation. However, the company said the executive was “misquoted”, and called for a correction.

UPS and TNT both declined official comment on the speculation.

ATSG reports second quarter results

Air Transport Services Group, Inc. reported a 40 percent increase in second quarter revenues, and a loss for the quarter, principally due to certain unreimbursed overhead expenses as a result of the recent arbitration ruling.
ATSG’s revenues were USD 394.9 million for the second quarter of 2008, compared with USD 281.3 million in the second quarter of 2007, an increase of USD 113.6 million.

Second-quarter DHL revenues from expenses subject to markup decreased 11 percent, as ABX Air operated fewer aircraft and managed fewer facilities for DHL than a year ago.
As previously reported, arbitrators ruled that ABX Air’s general overhead expense, excluding certain corporate costs, should be reimbursed in full with mark-up by DHL through the end of 2007 per the commercial agreements, but reimbursed only in part based on a negotiated allocation formula starting in 2008.
