DHL Express validated for C-TPAT program

DHL announced today that DHL Express has been validated for C-TPAT, the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, after a thorough review of its air express and ground shipment processing facilities and operations. C-TPAT is a joint government-business initiative designed to protect the security of the U.S. supply chain. Companies that are certified contribute to the security of our U.S. borders and to the continued facilitation of legitimate international trade.

As part of the validation process, domestic and international DHL facilities underwent a detailed security review of operations by customs authorities, including procedures and guidelines followed by DHL personnel and contractors, and the use of technology and physical assets. The US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) review also included Express’ customs brokerage and international clearance operations.

“This validation acknowledges our commitment to security procedures followed by our personnel, our air service providers, as well as those in place to protect our customers’ shipments,” said T. James Min II, Vice President, International Trade Affairs & Compliance, DHL Express USA. “DHL’s commitment to stringent security measures plays a key role in helping the U.S. Customs and Border Protection maintain the security of U.S. borders and curb potential terrorist activities in the global supply chain.”

To qualify for membership in C-TPAT, companies must conduct a detailed self-assessment of supply chain security using the C-TPAT guidelines outlined by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the trade community. Companies must also submit a supply chain security profile questionnaire to Customs, and implement a program to enhance security throughout the supply chain in accordance with the C-TPAT guidelines.

DHL Express was initially certified for C-TPAT by Customs and Border Protection in 2003 with validations taking place in 2006 and 2007.

ForestEthics Launches 'Do Not Mail' Campaign to Stop Junk Mail

Five years after the national Do Not Call Registry became the most popular consumer rights bill in history, conservation group ForestEthics launched its campaign for a Do Not Mail Registry today to give Americans the choice to stop wasteful, annoying and environmentally destructive junk mail that also fosters identity theft.

ForestEthics is urging Americans to sign a petition at http://www.donotmail.org/ demanding a national registry that will finally offer citizens control over the unsolicited coupons, credit cards, catalogs and advertisements that fill their mailboxes on a daily basis.

“The Do Not Call Registry of 2003 addressed a nuisance — telemarketers’ calls at dinnertime,” said Todd Paglia, Executive Director of ForestEthics. “Do Not Mail also addresses a nuisance, but junk mail has the added consequence of serious environmental effects that must be confronted if we are to stop climate change and reckless deforestation.”

The production of the 100 billion pieces of junk mail that Americans annually receive requires more than 100 million trees, while producing as much global warming emissions as 3.7 million cars. Moreover, this deforestation is occurring in forests that play vital roles in the fight against climate change: the Canadian Boreal and Indonesian Tropical Forest. If left intact, these trees and soils act as a defense against global warming. The Canadian Boreal Forest forms part of the greater Boreal Forest, which alone stores more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem on earth. Yet, it is still logged at a rate of 2 acres a minute, 24 hours a day, to produce junk mail and other paper products.

Junk mail distributed in the United States currently accounts for 30% of all the mail delivered in the world, though 44% of it goes to landfills unopened.

Express couriers launch fresh online services

Several leading global and national express companies operating in Asian markets have begun 2008 by introducing new electronic/online service enhancements for customers. On the international front, that group includes TNT, FedEx and DHL, while at a national level, one recent example of such a development involves Indian operator Elbee Express.
Netherlands-based TNT last month announced its intention to offer secured electronic invoices with digital signature in over 30 countries, including several key Asian markets, by the end of March.

TNT explained that the new service, called Express Invoicing, was due to be made available to customers in most European countries, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, adding that the web-based e-invoicing solution would be free of charge.

TNT said it already offered e-invoices in 37 countries around the world, with another 10 countries preparing to introduce the paperless invoice this year. The company estimated it could eventually eliminate up to one million paper invoices per month.

For customers, claimed TNT, the e-invoicing service reduced paper processing costs and improved the accounts payable management process.

The latest electronic enhancement announced by US-based FedEx, also in February, involves providing users of e-mail application Microsoft Office Outlook with the ability to connect directly to FedEx shipping services.

This year has also seen DHL Express, part of German group Deutsche Post World Net, unveil DHL Ship Now, an online programme offering “a fast and seamless method for sending parcels to any destination inside or outside the country”. DHL said that facility enabled shipments to be booked directly over the internet without a DHL account number.

Meanwhile, Elbee Express claims to have become the first Indian express delivery company to offer customers the facility to access business information relating to their consignments and the ability to generate reports based on that data customised to their own needs.

Postal TrendWatch Q4 07

As of September 30, 2007, the Postal Service completed its first full quarter operating under its new rate structure, which was implemented on May 14, 2007. In a continuation of previous trends, First Class Mail volume declined, while Standard Mail volume increased.

Meanwhile, USPS’s year-end reports revealed significant financial setbacks, which the Service attributed to benefit-funding requirements of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act. Given the 10-year duration of those funding requirements, this problem is likely to continue. As a result, the Postal Service will need to continue increasing productivity and cutting costs to meet this requirement under the law’s new rate-cap provisions.
