Canadians who click online for bargains suffer long delivery delays

Shoppers seeking more variety and lower prices from online retailers in the U.S. are finding it’s taking weeks for packages to be delivered to Canadian addresses.

Toronto-based writer Stephanie Pearl-McPhee said she ordered yarn from a U.S. retailer in late September, and it took nearly three weeks before it was delivered. A package of yarn shipped from the United States typically arrives in Canada within four or five working days, McPhee said.

The Canada Border Services Agency said it has recorded an uptick in mail.

“The number of online purchases arriving by mail has recently surged, in part due to the strong Canadian dollar and the commencement of the holiday season — the busiest time of the year for postal services,” Chris Williams, a CBSA spokesman, said in an e-mail.

Williams said that despite challenging circumstances, the CBSA is releasing the majority of incoming mail into the Canada Post system for delivery.

Yvonne Yoerger, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service, said service standards and delivery times remain the same on the U.S. side. But, she said, she’s personally heard of some delays at the border.

Over the past few years, changing border security regulations along with increased volume have caused some border delays, said United Parcel Service spokeswoman Cristina Falcone. She said the rise of the loonie against the U.S. dollar over the past month may be affecting shipping times.

U.S. Postal Service Expands Implementation of Wireless Industrial Vehicle Management Solutions from I.D. Systems, Inc.

I.D. Systems, Inc. announced that it has received follow-on purchase orders from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to deploy I.D. Systems’ Wireless Asset Net(r) industrial vehicle management system at five additional mail distribution facilities. The orders are cumulatively valued at approximately USD 1.4 million. Fulfillment of these orders will increase the number of USPS facilities deploying the Wireless Asset Net system to 77.

The Wireless Asset Net consists of intelligent wireless devices (Vehicle Asset Communicators(r)) installed on powered industrial vehicles (such as forklifts and pallet movers), a patented communication infrastructure, and client-server software for access control, utilization analysis, real-time location tracking, and many other functions. The system is designed to improve industrial workplace safety and security by restricting vehicle access to trained, authorized operators and by providing electronic safety inspection checklists. The system is designed to reduce maintenance expenses by automatically uploading vehicle data, reporting vehicle problems in real time, giving management the option of scheduling maintenance according to actual vehicle usage rather than on a calendar basis, and helping plant management determine the optimal economic time to replace equipment. The system is also designed to help improve productivity by ensuring equipment is in the proper place at the right time and by providing management with unique reports on vehicle utilization.
