AT&T Government Solutions awarded USD 22 Million by The United States Postal Service

AT&T Inc. has announced that AT&T Government Solutions has been awarded up to USD 22 million under the Postal Advanced Telecommunications Network (PATN) contract. AT&T will upgrade 1,800 United States Postal Service (USPS) facilities with its Enhanced Virtual Private Network (EVPN) service.

The project will increase the total number of AT&T-managed EVPN sites to more than 5,500. The EVPN service provides seamless, integrated high speed connectivity to support next-generation applications across the USPS nationwide network. The period of performance is up to three years.

AT&T will provide Managed Services, which include engineering and design, on-site installation and proactive network management and reporting. AT&T’s global Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-enabled network will serve as the platform for this VPN solution.

The USPS is one of many federal agencies facing increased traffic demands from the widespread deployment of next-generation application deployments across their organizations. EVPN solutions are a robust, scalable and cost-effective way to address federal agencies’ growing bandwidth demands while increasing overall network performance.

In 2006, AT&T upgraded more than 3,000 fully managed EVPN sites as part of a widespread USPS-Enterprise Site Upgrade initiative.

DHL's USD 1.2 billion investment in U.S. operation boosts Middle East-USA trade lane

As part of its U.S. investments, DHL has modernized and expanded three super Hubs and six major Gateways, resulting in an increase in ground delivery capacity by 60 percent, reduced transit times and same day clearance of 99 percent of import shipments.

The newly upgraded service will benefit customers of DHL’s all-inclusive, door-to-door services for expediting trade between the two markets. With these services, shipments are handled by DHL from pick-up to delivery, with tracking details providing complete visibility of shipment progress. In addition, customers shipping from the UAE will now benefit from swifter transit times with an enhanced two day delivery to the U.S. and next day service to New York.

As part of its enhanced service DHL operates the largest network of in-house customs brokers to support clearance of all dutiable shipments, providing streamlined customs clearance, effective tracking of shipments, and reduction in transit times. With 99 percent of all shipments imported into the USA cleared the same day, DHL offers the fastest entry into the local U.S. network, regardless of the origin country.

UPS updates sustainability report

UPS today released its fourth annual Corporate Sustainability Report tracking progress on the company’s economic, social and environmental objectives.

The report is based on 2006 data. UPS reports annually on its progress meeting five-year goals for employment, safety, environmental and philanthropic initiatives. UPS was the first company in its industry to issue a sustainability report.

Achievements cited in the new report include:

– Employees contributed nearly 1 million volunteer hours to community projects around the globe.
– UPS achieved one of its safety goals a year ahead of schedule, cutting lost-time injuries by 28 pct last year.
– The company maintains the largest alternative-fuel fleet in the industry and shaved more than 28.5 million miles by using technology to streamline delivery routes.
– UPS recycled more than 2.7 million pounds of electronic equipment from its operations.
