UPS tries to boost delivery to investors Parcels group has struggled to integrate acquisitions and justify its strategy since going public

There have been few better investments than the Dollars 100 of borrowed cash that Jim Casey, a 19-year-old entrepreneur, used to buy twotelephones and a fleet of bicycles in 1907.

Nearly a 100 years later, the messenger service he founded from a tiny Seattle office has grown into the world’s largest parcel courier, with a market capitalisation of Dollars 85bn and operations in more than 200 countries. But as United Parcel Service approaches its centenary, the group’s investment appeal is no longer so clear.

In the seven years since UPS went public, its shares have struggled to gain momentum, rising 30 per cent compared with a near tripling in those of FedEx, its biggest rival.

Asked at an investor conference this month whether UPS would have been better remaining private, Scott Davis, chief financial officer, replied: “No comment”.

Investors’ lukewarm attitude towards UPS, known as “Big Brown” after the colour of its trucks, in part reflects the sluggish growth of its mature domestic business, which has lost market share to FedEx. But the biggest source of caution is the group’s expansion beyond parcels into a broader range of supply chain services.

Continuing its commitment to small businesses, UPS CapitalSM, the financial services arm of UPS, has become one of the nation’s top lenders under the government-guaranteed 7(a) loan program of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
For the SBA’s fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2006, UPS Capital Business Credit, a unit of UPS Capital, facilitated 304 SBA 7(a) loans valued at USD190.7 million. Shippers prepare for the seasonal rush of packages

UPS plans to ramp up its Inland Empire operations for the shopping season.

The package shipper will hire 900 additional workers for its San Bernardino, Ontario, Riverside, Temecula, Barstow, Blythe, Victorville and Yucca Valley operations, UPS spokeswoman Page Dossey said.

DHL will deliver more than 2 million packages on its peak day in the United States, Dec. 20.

DHL hired hundreds of part-time package handlers to help meet the holiday demand, said John Cameron, DHL USA executive vice president of operations, in a Nov. 21 release. DHL added 300 daily truck routes and 63 new domestic flights a week to its regular network schedules for the holiday rush.

DHL employs 300 people at its 262,000 square-foot, USD70 million West Coast distribution center located at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside.

FedEx will extend employee hours to meet the holiday package delivery demand, spokesman Matt Ceniceros said in a previous interview.

FedEx likely will hire a small number of temporary package handlers for its ground operations to meet the holiday demand, he said.

Headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., FedEx employs more than 260,000 people.

FedEx will handle 9.8 million packages on Dec. 18. That will be the most packages FedEx has handled on a single day since it was founded in 1973.
