Postal Service's shipping and mailing guide reaches 110 million households

Running out of time? Running out of patience? Check the mailbox this week and open the Postal Service’s Holiday Shipping and Mailing Guide for helpful solutions to some of the season’s challenges.

The guide is filled with customer-friendly information on the Postal Service’s most popular products, services and time-saving features, including free package pickup, Click-N-Ship labels and desktop postage, options for mailing across the country and overseas and recommended mailing deadlines.

The Postal Service issued its first guide in 2004. Independent consumer research showed that nearly 40 percent of those surveyed remembered receiving and seeing the guide and that more than two-thirds of those consumers used the information in the guide.

More than 110 million copies will be delivered to every residential household this week.

Lost line-haul business impacts ABX in 3Q

Losing a contract to manage over-the-road freight operations of DHL Network Operations Inc. took a bite out of ABX Air Inc.’s third-quarter profit
The company said late Thursday it earned USD6.6 million, or 11 cents a share, for the quarter ended Sept. 30, down 10.8 percent from USD7.4 million, or 13 cents a share for the same quarter a year ago. Revenue dropped 24 percent to USD281.3 million from USD369.9 million in third-quarter 2005.
DHL, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post World Net of Germany, assumed management of its line-haul business in May, which ABX previously managed, pulling the Wilmington-based company’s profit down, ABX said. This year’s third quarter includes a USD257,000 impairment charge related to the loss of that contract.
DHL’s line-haul business contributed USD74.8 million revenue for ABX during last year’s third quarter.
For the first nine months of the year, ABX reported income of USD21.1 million, or 36 cents per share, which was flat compared to last year’s earnings of USD21.2 million. Revenue fell to USD954.1 million from USD1.1 billion a year ago.

DHL reduces loss in US Express

Deutsche Post announced yesterday, 3rd Quarter results up by a third on 2005. But the performance of its US Express division is a continuing cause for concern, dragging the rest of the Express business and the whole group down.

Headline growth was impressive, with consolidated revenue up by 35% to *14,887m and EBIT up 40% to *1.03bn compared with the same period last year. But these figures are flattered by the acquisition of Exel in early 2006.

The logistics business continues to perform reasonably. The Exel acquisition is running smoothly and the Division as a whole is gaining market-share. Revenue for the nine months was up to *16 billion, with *8.6billion coming from the acquisition of Exel. EBIT for the year-to-date was *513 million.

The problem area remains Express. The US Express division continues to lose money, although losses have been reduced by what was called a “three digit million euro amount”. CEO, Klaus Zumwinkel stated both in comments to analysts and in an interview earlier this week that the US Express business had 10% market share and that if it achieved 12% “we would be very happy”. Elsewhere the company described growth in Express as strong, with double-digit growth in revenue in Asia-Pacific. Overall results for Express revenue were down over Q3 2005 by 2.8% at *3,755million but EBIT was back in positive territory at *86million.
