Shift from traditional mail order channels to online continues

The Annual Multi-Channel Report from Abacus in the US highlights the growing importance of online for mail order companies.
While the report highlights the shift from traditional mail order, such as telephone, mail and fax, to online continues, the report says that the majority of households continue to order through the traditional channels, with these accounting for 55% of orders, down 4% from 2004.
At the same time, 25% of direct sales for multi-channel merchants were made via the web in 2005, compared with 20% in 2004. The proportion of dollars and transactions generated online continue to grow strongly at 19% and 17% respectively year on year.
It reveals a 14% increase in the number of transactions and total sales for multi-channel retailers in 2005, up from a 10% increase in 2004, further demonstrating the continued growth of the online channel in mail order.
According to Abacus, the latest increase was driven by the purchasing activity of 62m households making approximately 257m purchases via direct channels in 2005, worth USD31.3bn in sales.

UPS's Circle of Honor Expands. 117,000 Years of Accident-Free Driving.

UPS today announced the induction of 784 elite drivers into its “Circle of Honor,” pushing to 4,202 the total of active drivers who have steered clear of accidents for 25 years or more.

Of the 4,202, 107 of those men and women have gone 35 years or more without an accident, and six have gone 40 years or more. Collectively, UPS’s active Circle of Honor drivers have compiled nearly 117,000 years of accident-free driving.

“UPS is committed to the safety of all our drivers as well as those with whom we share the roads,” said Kevin Strahan, UPS’s corporate health and safety manager. “The men and women who have achieved membership in the Circle of Honor are the best of the best. They’ve consistently demonstrated that commitment by going at least a quarter century without an avoidable accident.”

UPS says it is working toward a postal reform compromise

A UPS spokesman said Friday that UPS and the U.S. Postal Service had reached a compromise on the single-piece parcel post issue that is holding up passage of postal reform legislation, but claimed that the office of the key senator who is a champion of the cause rejected it.

And late Friday, the spokesman said that UPS would not oppose the postal reform bill as it stood.

The news comes after an 11th hour announcement from the Direct Marketing Association that asked members to write to the Atlanta-based company to persuade them to stop blocking passage of the bill.

DHL becomes a contender

When considering carriers for overnight express packages, shippers may now have three legitimate options: FedEx, UPS and newcomer DHL Express. DHL commissioned a transit study this summer that demonstrates the carrier is performing as well or better than its veteran U.S. competitors.

The study tracked 14,400 overnight express shipments between 44 major U.S. cities across 480 lanes during July. The results showed UPS and DHL tied at a 90% reliability rate for 10:30 a.m. delivery, followed closely by FedEx at 88%.

“For two or three years, we’ve battled quite a degree of skepticism,” says DHL Americas CEO John Mullen. This study, he says, vindicates DHL’s efforts to break into the UPS/FedEx duopoly. “It has been a difficult road but we have come through it, and we think our customers can feel safe that they are not taking a chance on a niche player with us.”
