US Postal Service wins Closing the Circle award for biodiesel use

The US Postal Service (USPS) has received the 2006 Closing the Circle (CTC) Award from the office of the Federal Environmental Executive for its use of biodiesel fuel in its fleets. Accepting the CTC award on behalf of the USPS, Han Dinh, programme director of vehicle engineering, said, “Our research into the technical and operational implications of biodiesel use in motor vehicles continues to generate important data that is being shared with regulators, automotive engineers, equipment manufacturers and other stakeholders. Such information is critical to the acceptance and widespread use of biodiesel fuels by the general public.”

FedEx launches critical inventory logistics program for customers

FedEx Corp. today announced the launch of FedEx Critical Inventory Logistics, a supply chain service that will enable customers to more efficiently manage high value and time critical inventory by utilizing the power and reach of the FedEx portfolio of companies. The service will focus on customers in telecommunication, semiconductor, biomedical and other high technology industries. “Customers are increasingly looking to FedEx for our expertise in managing just-in-time, critical inventories,” said Tom Schmitt, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Global Supply Chain Services. “Our unique mix of networks allows FedEx to create customized solutions to address almost every supply chain need.”

FedEx Express among top 40 'Black Enterprise' diversity companies

Black Enterprise magazine has selected FedEx Express as one of 40 US companies to be included in its second annual list of best companies for diversity. The magazine also recognized FedEx Express as being among the “very best at bringing talented people of color into the ranks of senior management,” along with Xerox Corp. and McDonald’s.

Buying TNT

ith new takeover rumors swirling around TNT, the company did its part to satisfy the chatter, although hardly on the scale that has TNT’s name making the rounds on the mergers and acquisitions market. The Netherlands-based express, mail and logistics giant added two highly targeted postal businesses to its TNT Post operation, shoring up its outlook for the direction of the European distribution and delivery market.

But the additions of Italy’s TMW Italia and British courier JD Williams to the mail operation still left TNT with at least one far larger transaction in its business plan still undone.

DHL Global Mail enhances residential parcel service offering to Latin America

DHL Global Mail made improvements to its residential postal parcel delivery services to Latin America in response to dramatic increases in e-commerce and mail order shipping to the region. The Plantation, FL-based company said it has reduced delivery times and enhanced customer service capabilities by offering improved “track and trace” features. The track and trace capabilities allow e-commerce and other online retailers to check the status of their parcel via DHL Global Mail’s Web site. The product also includes customs clearance and returns notification.
