US Postal Service earns award for marketing research

The US Postal Service has been awarded the advertising industry’s highest honor for research that results in high-impact marketing, a postal official said. The 2006 Grand Ogilvy Award was accepted by Postal Service representatives for the organization’s “Access” campaign, which increased awareness of USPS package shipping products and services. “We knew our small business customers would take advantage of the convenience of our services through usps.com, but the challenge was building awareness,” said Chief Marketing Officer Anita Bizzotto. “We successfully did that.”

The effort included television, print, radio and Web advertising, as well as employee awareness efforts.

An Overnite invasion of brown

Since United Parcel Service Inc acquired trucking company Overnite Corp in August last year, its overall package volume increased 4.3% to 14.8 million per day. UPS purchased Overnite in a bid to tap into the trucking industry, where it has had limited success because of a 150-pound cap on its package trucks. As part of the assimilation, the Overnite brand will be replaced with UPS Freight starting May 1, while its 22,000 trailers will be painted with UPS’ trademark brown. The assimilation could help UPS in its battle with rival FedEx Corp. but complicates contract talks with the Teamsters union expected to begin near the end of next year.

FedEx gains more weekly flights to China

FedEx Express will now have the rights to operate three additional weekly frequencies to China, bringing its total to 26. With these frequencies, which were awarded by the US Department of Transportation, FedEx Express will maintain its leadership position with more all-cargo flights to and from China than any other US cargo airline. “FedEx saw the promise in China more than 20 years ago. China’s role in the global marketplace continues to escalate. In fact, China is expected to be the fastest- growing market for air cargo, averaging more than 10 percent per year between 2003 and 2023,” said Michael L. Ducker, executive vice president, International for FedEx Express.

USPS' Parcel Return Service is here to stay

Customers and merchants looking for an easy and economical way to return merchandise through the mail can now rely on Parcel Return Service (PRS) to handle their needs on a permanent basis. By approving a recommendation from the Postal Rate Commission, the U.S. Postal Service Governors on Wednesday made PRS a permanent mailing option. The Board of Governors voted to make the change effective on April 2, 2006. Launched as a two-year experiment in October 2003, the service offers a cost-effective way for merchants to obtain items their customers choose to return. It provides added convenience to customers through a specially designed, prepaid return label that can be included in the original packages, mailed to customers, or made available for a customer to download via the Internet.

FedEx lifts its earnings target

FedEx increased its full-year earnings target and said the economic outlook remained stable, after announcing a 35 per cent rise in third-quarter profits.
The better-than-expected results were driven by strong growth in US ground deliveries during the busy Christmas holiday season and continued expansion in its international express business. FedEx has been among the best performers in the transportation sector during recent years as global trade increases and manufacturers and retailers shift towards just-in-time supply chains. Fred Smith, chief executive, said the world economy remained robust, and predicted US growth of 3.2 per cent during the company’s 2007 fiscal year, which begins in June. Mr Smith said FedEx remained on the lookout for acquisitions as the global transport and logistics industry consolidated. But he said the company would not be rushed into deals. “We’re not going to overpay for something because it simply destroys shareholder value and we need to make sure there is a great synergy,” he said.
