Printer RR Donnelley & Sons Company acquired print-and-mail services company Critical Mail Continuity Services Ltd. CMCS, based in Britain, serves financial services, telecommunications, utility, government and other large organizations with disaster recovery, business continuity, digital print and print-and-mail services. Clients use it to ensure that vital communications are not interrupted by catastrophic damage to in-house processing centers and to handle peak-period volumes.

UPS ranked no. 4 in U.S. for “Best Reputation”

UPS has just been ranked No. 4 in the United States for best reputation. The latest Harris Interactive corporate reputation study also cited UPS for excellent customer service compared to its peers and ranked it No. 2 overall for “highest trust” in the event of a service problem. The Harris Interactive survey, published last week in The Wall Street Journal, ranked UPS No. 4 overall behind Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola and Google. Harris Interactive asked more than 19,500 consumers to rate companies on a list of 20 attributes in six key dimensions.

TNT adds NA President

TNT Express, looking to raise its profile in the United States and Canada, created the new position of president for North America and named Matthew McDonough to the post. The new structure separates North American and South American regional duties that had been overseen entirely by Curtis Watson, president of the Americas for TNT Express. The shift comes as Netherlands-based TNT is preparing to sell its separate logistics unit in a move to focus more closely on its mail and express divisions, which are strong in Europe but lag far behind the large express operators in the United States.

US Postal Service loses bid to trademark terms such as ‘first-class mail’

The Federal Court has tossed out a bid by the United States Postal Service to trademark such common terms as “first-class mail” in Canada. The recent ruling means Canada Post can continue to use the term and a dozen others. It had asked for a judicial review after the registrar of trademarks allowed the USPS to adopt 13 terms for use in Canada. Those terms included “priority mail,”
“first-class mail” and “signature confirmation,” as well as the USPS eagle logo. Justice Anne Mactavish ruled that because the USPS is not a public authority in Canada, it cannot use a clause in the Trademarks Act that protects official marks.
