DHL announces plans to expand facility near Columbus, Ohio

DHL plans to spend USD4 million to expand near Rickenbacker Airport, a move that will create 150 jobs. The express delivery and logistics company said the investment will be made over five years at its DHL Columbus Commerce Park on Spiegel Drive, north of Rickenbacker. The facility has 120 employees, a mixture of DHL workers and employees contracted through a company that is a partner of DHL. The additional hires primarily will be contract employees, DHL spokesman Robert Mintz said. DHL will expand its 320,000-square-foot warehouse at Rickenbacker by more than 20 percent. DHL uses the facility to provide logistics services, such as warehousing, inventory management, packaging and transportation management. “The primary reason for this expansion is growth in our third-party operations,” said John Robinson, director of logistics operations. “It allows us to expand for our current clients and accommodate new clients.”

GAO urges better training for handling suspicious US mail

The US Postal Service needs to develop more detailed training to prepare its workers to handle suspicious mail more carefully, the Government Accountability Office said Monday.

The GAO cited mistakes in the handling of a letter containing the poison ricin that was found in the Greenville, S.C. post office in October 2003.

The letter, which contained a sealed vial, was labeled “Caution: Ricin Poison,” GAO noted.

It said the letter was discovered around midnight and postal officials double wrapped it and removed it to an area away from workers, but did not call postal inspectors until the next day. Inspectors then called in local emergency officials and the letter was sent to the state health department and later to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

US Overnite investors accept UPS offer

Shareholders of trucking company Overnite Corp. on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a proposed USD1.25 billion acquisition by UPS Inc., the world’s largest package delivery company.

The cash transaction, which values Overnite shares at USD43.25, is scheduled to close Friday. The buyout already has been approved by the Federal Trade Commission.

The combination will expand UPS’ ground transportation in North America. As a result, Atlanta-based UPS will become a top motor freight carrier and will better compete against rivals such as FedEx Corp.
