US Postal Service warns it may drop AuthentiDate postmark if revenue doesn’t rise

AuthentiDate Holding Corp. has received notice from the US Postal Service that AuthentiDate’s Electronic Postmark service failed to meet necessary revenue standards between February and April 2005. A strategic alliance agreement between AuthentiDate and the Postal Service names the Schenectady company as the preferred provider of the USPS Electronic Postmark (EPM) service. When the agreement was signed, in August 2002, the parties agreed on certain performance standards, but sales have fallen short. The parties have been discussing a new arrangement since last year, but have been unable to agree on new performance standards. In a letter dated May 23, the Postal Service said it is willing to discuss any plans AuthentiDate may have to improve the EPM system’s revenue, but that it intends to exercise its right to terminate the agreement if AuthentiDate is unable to cure the default.

DHL names Hickler to new US strategy post

DHL named former APL Logistics CEO Hans Hickler to the new position of vice president of strategy and business implementation in the United States. Deutsche Post-controlled DHL lost USD638 million in the US in 2004, its first full year of attempting to become the United States’ “third alternative” for express delivery. DHL Express Americas CEO John Mullen has said that DHL’s US service levels need to improve if the global operator is going to profitably compete with incumbents FedEx and UPS in the world’s largest express market. Hickler’s appointment appears to be part of an effort by DHL to shore up US customer service. “We are confident that DHL will benefit from Mr. Hickler’s extensive background in management and technology, and his consistent focus on customer needs will help ensure that every DHL customer receives a best-in-class customer experience,” said Mullen. Hickler will be responsible for the development and implementation of DHL’s US business strategy, as well as overseeing the company’s real estate, procurement and internal consulting functions.

United Parcel Service’s advertising slogan asks: “What can Brown do for you?” On Monday, the answer grew longer when the company, known for its brown delivery trucks, agreed to buy Overnite Corporation, a US truck operator, for Dollars 1.25bn.

The deal adds ground freight transportation to a growing list of logistics services offered by UPS, as the company diversifies beyond its original package delivery business.

Last year, UPS increased its heavy airfreight capability through the acquisition of Menlo Worldwide Forwarding and the company has a fast-growing supply chain management business, which helps customers co-ordinate their movement of goods around the world.
