Winestock to succeed Darden in directing UPS’s US operations

UPS today announced changes in its top management, including the upcoming retirement of the executive responsible for all package operations in the United States. Cal Darden, for the past seven years the senior vice president of US operations and a member of the UPS Board of Directors since 2001, will retire in early 2005 after a 33-year career with UPS. UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew announced Darden would be succeeded by Jim Winestock, currently the manager of UPS’s North Central Region. That region includes six states in America’s heartland with 244 facilities and more than 51,000 employees. In succeeding Darden, Winestock will join the UPS Management Committee, which directs the day-to-day management of the company.

DHL dispatches its message to USA

DHL has hopes that red and yellow will be as popular a color combination for the holidays as red and green.

The colors for the global shipping giant are part of the new look adopted after its USD1.1 billion acquisition of Airborne last year (the two previously used white and different shades of red).

The new look popped up virtually overnight this summer on 426 warehouses, 2,841 retail store locations, 15,338 drop boxes, 17,000 uniformed personnel, 18,000 vehicles and 275 million pieces of packaging.

“We said we have to paint everything yellow as quickly as we can,” says Dick Metzler, executive vice president marketing of DHL Americas. “We really did fast-track this. It was almost a military operation.”

TNT Logistics sees further turnover growth in North America

Dutch mail, express and logistics company TPG NV’s unit TNT Logistics expects a further turnover growth in North America in the next few years, Jeff Hurley, managing director of TNT North America, said on November 19, 2004. The company targets a double-digit turnover growth. TNT North America generated a turnover of 630 mln euro (USD816.8 mln) in 2003. Hurley expects that the number of contracts with clients will increase in the next few years. Currently TNT North America has 181 clients. The value of the contracts with these clients vary from USD2.0 mln (1.54 mln euro) to USD50 mln (38.56 mln euro) per year. The company ecpects further USD300 mln (231.4 mln euro) to USD400 mln (308.5 mln euro) of additional turnover in North America from contracts with potential clients. TNT North America has some 6,000 employees.

FedEx to expand Kinko’s in Asia, posts China boom

FedEx Corp. is posting explosive growth in China and now plans to expand its Kinko’s copy-chain across Asia, a senior executive said on Wednesday. FedEx, which vies with Deutsche Post’s DHL Express and United Parcel Service Inc in the global courier arena, is trying to muscle in on an insular sector that it says could one day be the world’s top cargo market. Analysts estimate it could be worth USD1.5 billion annually. FedEx’s delivery volumes in China grew 52 percent in the quarter ended Aug. 31, said David Cunningham, FedEx’s Asia Pacific president. He did not elaborate. The US firm does not divulge sales by country or region. Now FedEx also wants to pump up the number of Kinko’s outlets in Asia to incorporate it into its global courier network and bring in more customers.
