US postal governors approve major capital projects

The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors approved several major capital projects today at its monthly meeting.

The Board approved funding for Surface Visibility, the third phase of the Surface Air Support System (SASS). Surface Visibility is the third piece of the overall Transportation Visibility strategy. In the first phase, an infrastructure was developed to track FedEx and Amtrak shipments. In the second phase, SASS was expanded to include commercial air visibility. In this phase, the systems will track several visibility points from container loading to the unloading of both Postal Service and postal customer trailers. Wireless scanners will be used to capture data. The system will be deployed at 129 facilities.

US international mail business up for grabs?

Foreign air carriers may soon get a slice of the lucrative US international mail markets if a current bill to liberalise US postal services gets approved.
Hearings were taking place last week in the House of Representatives on the postal reform act, which includes a complete liberalisation of the air transport of mail, allowing the postal service (USPS) to go to an open bid process. Currently, international US mail has to be carried by US carriers, with foreign companies only allowed to carry mail via codeshares or to destinations not served by US airlines.

GTI will upgrade telecommunications networks at 108 USPS facilities

Applied Digital Solutions, an advanced technology development company, have announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Government Telecommunications, Inc. (GTI), has been awarded a contract option valued at USD25 million from the United States Postal Service to upgrade telecommunications networks at 108 Postal Service facilities.
