UPS chief says company needs to stay hungry

With an improving economy and strong profits, UPS chief executive Mike Eskew says his company’s greatest challenge is to avoid complacency amid growing competition to deliver goods and services. In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, Eskew said the world’s largest shipping carrier plans to open at least 1,200 more UPS Stores, formerly known as Mail Boxes Etc., over the next several years and will use technology to attract more customers and fill planes making overseas deliveries.

UPS makes the most of its USD33 billion in annual revenue from small-package deliveries in the United States. But overseas shipments and its supply-chain management services are growing, and the Atlanta-based company has been concentrating more internationally, which is emphasized by its television commercials promoting its delivery workers around the globe.

UPS gains top honors for diversity leadership

In just the first four months of 2004, UPS has received top honors from several prominent organisations for its commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace.

UPS recently ranked No. 32 on DiversityInc magazine’s “Top 50 Companies for Diversity” and also was listed among Hispanic magazine’s “Corporate 100.” Additionally, two of UPS’s leading Latina executives – Jovita Carranza and Ana Guevara – were recognized by Hispanic Business magazine and the World Trade Center of Miami, respectively, for their professional and personal accomplishments.

Toshiba and UPS join to set new standard for US laptop repair

The Digital Products Division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. and UPS have announced a new laptop computer repair process designed to reduce turnaround time for customers to four days or less.

The move is part of a wide-ranging customer service initiative by Toshiba designed to raise the bar in the highly competitive PC market. Toshiba expects to build customer loyalty as its customers recognise that if they ever do have a problem with their laptop, downtime will be held to an absolute minimum.

FedEx US Rebrands Kinko’s Unit

Nearly five months after FedEx announced the purchase of Kinko’s for USD2.4 billion in cash, it said it would be rebranding the separately run unit as FedEx Kinko’s Office and Print Centers. The company unveiled the new FedEx Kinko’s logo and brand to employees at an event in Dallas earlier in the day, while also announcing a timetable for the rollout of FedEx services at 1,100 stores in the U.S. By the third-quarter, the company said its day-definite ground and time-definite global express shipping services will be available at all FedEx Kinko’s stores.

“This new brand leverages the historical strengths of both companies while powerfully redefining the future of the business services marketplace,” said Fred Smith, chairman and CEO. “The FedEx Kinko’s Office and Print Center brand will serve as a beacon to businesses large and small searching for a total business solutions center.”
