US FedEx and UPS fight ruling on ownership of airline

FedEx and United Parcel Service are asking the Department of Transportation to reject a federal administrative law judge’s ruling that Astar Air Cargo is owned and controlled by an American citizen, not a German company. FedEx and U.P.S. made the request in a filing that served as a response to the Dec. 19 ruling. At issue is Astar’s ability to do business in the United States. FedEx and U.P.S. say the Miami-based Astar, which was called DHL Airways under former ownership, should be disqualified because of its ties to the German government.

DHL wins logistics contract with HP Korea

DHL’s logistics division has been awarded a four-year contract with Hewlett Packard Korea. The contract covers HP’s entire product range in Korea, including PCs and related equipment. According to DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, the contract is particularly significant since it sees the implementation of the next-generation HP MUJU online logistics platform. The new one-stop platform enables paperless, online sharing of information between HP and their logistics supplier.

FedEx expands tests of U.S. mail deliveries

FedEx has said it is broadening tests of a low-cost parcel service using U.S. mail carriers for home deliveries. The test, announced Jan. 23, comes as the Memphis-based company looks to expand its ground business.

Rival United Parcel Service earlier introduced a lower-cost service for large commercial customers shipping to rural and other thinly populated destinations.

USPS electronic verification is in the mail

The Postal Service, Microsoft and a technology company called Authentidate have developed a system called Electronic Postmark for verifying that a document’s content is the same as when a user saved it. The service, introduced in October, is in some ways more a notary public’s stamp than a postmark, intended particularly for those affixing their electronic signatures to documents relayed online.

UPS Sued for franchise violations by coalition of Mail Boxes Etc owners

A national alliance of nearly 200 Mail Boxes Etc. stores, under the auspices of a nonprofit support and advocacy group called the Platinum Shield Association, are now locked in two California lawsuits in Los Angeles Superior Court with parent company United Parcel Service-Mail Boxes Etc. The plaintiffs in the current lawsuit are a group of storeowners who refused to convert to UPS stores and contend that UPS used high-pressure and questionable sales tactics on storeowners to sign the Gold Shield Program contract. Plaintiffs also claim that UPS pressured thousands of Mail Boxes Etc. franchisees to become UPS stores under contracts that are in violation of franchise laws, because they lacked appropriate and adequate disclosure information.
