US Astar seeks sanctions on UPS, FedEx

Astar Air Cargo is seeking sanctions against rivals Federal Express and United Parcel Service for making what it described as “unsupported and deceptive claims” in a recent motion they filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation In a pleading filed with an administrative law judge on Friday, Astar contended that requests by its two U.S. rivals are part of a coordinated FedEx-UPS campaign to protect their current stronghold in the U.S. express delivery marketplace.

Possible anthrax finding mail center closes dozen mail facilities

The Postal Service closed 11 Washington-area post offices while authorities ran tests to determine whether anthrax was detected at the Navy site that handles mail for federal agencies.

Postal Service spokesman Azeezaly Jaffer said authorities decided “out of an abundance of caution” to close the facilities and test them for any biohazard contamination.

UPS, FedEx turn to US post office

United Parcel Service and FedEx Corp. are taking advantage of a U.S. Postal Service discount for package consolidators to steal away some of the post office’s biggest customers. Atlanta-based UPS on Thursday launched UPS Basic, a low-cost delivery service that will have the U.S. Postal Service making final deliveries of some of its packages. The new program is targeting mail-order merchants, who are some of the post office’s biggest customers due to its cheaper rates compared to UPS or competitor FedEx Corp. FedEx, based in Memphis, has mounted a furious assault on the ground delivery market, and is in the middle of a test with the postal service with an eye to adding a low-end delivery offering.

FedEx opposes transportation nominee

FedEx is opposing the nomination of Kirk Van Tine to become the No 2 official at the Transportation Department.

Van Tine was the department’s general counsel when the government gave the airlines USD5 billion to compensate for losses sustained after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Transportation officials later demanded that FedEx return about a third of the USD101 million it received because it hadn’t lost as much as it had claimed.
