Deutsche Post urges privatization to ease US expansion

Deutsche Post, the global mail, express and logistics group, has urged the German government to speed its privatization to ease regulatory problems facing its U.S. parcel delivery operations. The sale of further shares in Deutsche Post, which is still 62% government-owned after an initial public offering in 1999, “would help us qualitatively, particularly in the U.S., ” chief financial officer Edgar Ernst told the Financial Times of London.

US DHL shipping airborne jobs to Florida

DHL is pressing ahead with plans to integrate the operations of both DHL Worldwide Express and Airborne in a move that could affect 1,000 jobs at Seattle-based Airborne. The development highlights DHL’s determination to proceed with its US strategy, despite the ongoing legal challenge posed by rivals UPS and FedEx.

Deutsche Post’s express carrier subsidiary DHL has announced it will permanently locate its US headquarters in southern Florida and will integrate its operations under the umbrella name DHL Express. Although expected, this implies that the name Airborne will disappear and its head office in Seattle will be closed. The consolidation, which will be carried out over the next 12-15 months, will relocate some personnel from Seattle, but it is feared some will lose their jobs. The precise details will be unveiled in the first quarter of next year.

US Post offices to encourage public recycling

A Colorado congressman is drafting legislation that would require post offices across the country to encourage the public to recycle unwanted mail by allowing local organizations to place recycling containers in post office lobbies.

“Placing recycling containers at these facilities would not only provide a convenience to postal patrons, it would also encourage the recycling of tons of unwanted mail and keep these materials from filling up local landfill space,” said Rep. Mark Udall, D-Colo.

Stocks gain on encouraging Motorola earnings

Better-than-expected profits from Motorola lifted Wall Street higher Monday as investors grew more optimistic that third-quarter earnings in general will be strong. The Dow Jones industrials rose nearly 90 points to a 16-month high.

Volume was light as the bond market was closed for Columbus Day and Japan’s financial markets were closed for a national holiday.

“It’s a bit of a surprise to see this much strength on a low volume day. You have to give credit to the Motorola numbers,” said Peter Dunay, chief market strategist at Wall Street Access, a New York-based brokerage firm.

But he added, “It’s really anticipation that’s driving the market. Most analysts are now expecting even more from earnings, which could put the market under pressure.”

DHL's headquarters move to siphon off 500 Seattle jobs

More than 500 local jobs at express-mail company DHL will be shipped out of town over the next 15 months as the company consolidates its home offices in South Florida, the company said.

DHL, which acquired Seattle-based Airborne Inc. in a USD1 billion deal in August, will move all 368 information technology jobs to Scottsdale, Ariz., while 160 jobs in marketing, finance, human resources and other departments will be transferred to Plantation, Fla., said Kim Levy, a DHL spokeswoman based in New York City.

“A large number of these employees will be offered relocation packages, but it has not been decided how many,” Levy said.
