Deutsche Post asks EU to look into Astar dispute

Deutsche Post has said its asked the European Commission to look into whether U.S. rivals were being given the same treatment in Europe as it was in the U.S., though it has lodged no formal complaint.

A Post DPWGn.DE spokesman said the company had asked EU Commissioner Loyola de Palacio to investigate whether a partnership between U.S. rival UPS and Danish airline Star Air was comparable to that between its own DHL unit and U.S. airline partner Astar.

UPS, FedEx urge US to drop Astar deadline

FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service on Monday asked the U.S. Department of Transportation to lift the Dec. 1 deadline for an administrative law judge’s recommendations on the ownership of Astar Air Cargo, formerly DHL Airways. The big U.S. express carriers complained that two U.S.-based subsidiaries of archrival Deutsche Post World Net have failed to comply with the judge’s order to produce documents related to the investigation into whether Astar is illegally controlled by Deutsche Post.

Europe seeks UPS, Star Air probe

The European Commission has called on Copenhagen to investigate the ties between United Parcel Service and a Danish airline in an attempt to establish whether the US delivery giant has effective control over the carrier – a finding that, if confirmed, could lead the airline to lose its licence.

The Commission’s request was made in a formal letter to the Danish government in late August, and was sparked by a complaint from Deutsche Post, the German postal group and an arch-rival to both UPS and FedEx, another US delivery group.

Deutsche Post AG, the German postal giant whose ties with a US carrier is being challenged by its American rivals, has struck back. Chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel said the company had asked European regulators to examine deals between European airlines, and US package-delivery companies FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. that are similar to Deutsche Post’s arrangement with US airline Astar Air Cargo Inc.. FedEx and UPS are vigorously questioning Deutsche Post’s alliance with Astar, prompting the Germans to retaliate.

UPS accelerates flow of packages around the US

As part of a continuing effort to improve customer service, UPS has completed a major upgrade of its U.S. ground distribution network, reducing the time it takes for hundreds of thousands of packages to arrive at their destination every day.

The changes, implemented over the past four months, amount to the largest time-in-transit improvement effort since 1998 when UPS became the first carrier to offer money-back guarantees on its ground service. Each modification has slashed a full day off the previous guaranteed delivery time without any change in customer rates or pick-up and delivery hours.
