FedEx Express debuts hybrid electric truck

FedEx Express on Tuesday introduced a low-emission, hybrid electric-powered delivery vehicle that could become a standard medium-duty delivery truck for the carrier. The new vehicle will decrease particulate emissions by 90 percent, reduce smog-causing emissions by 75 percent and increase fuel efficiency by 50 percent, according to FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp.

TNT plans for life without Airborne

TNT Express is confident it can find an alternative US delivery network if its arrangement with Airborne falls through. TNT is not expecting to renew its partnership with Airborne when the contract expires in December 2004, following the acquisition of Airborne by DHL. But group MD Alan Jones said he has contingency plans if it proved impossible to see out the current contract.

UPS to test hydrogen vehicles in U.S.

United Parcel Service will begin testing package delivery vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells late this year, the carrier announced Monday. The zero-emission vehicles, built by DaimlerChrysler, will be the first use of fuel cell technology in a commercial delivery fleet in North America, according to UPS.

Deutsche Post boss confident on Airborne takeover

Deutsche Post’s top executive on Monday said he didn’t think a probe by U.S. regulators would block the German mail and express company’s USD1.1 billion takeover of Airborne Inc. “The takeover is legally OK. We’re relaxed about it,” Chief Executive Klaus Zumwinkel said at an industry conference in Bonn. Deutsche Post plans to spin off Airborne’s airline assets into DHL Airways, an independent company that it says complies with U.S. laws requiring American ownership of domestic carriers.

Judge schedules DHL Airways pre-hearing

The administrative law judge overseeing the controversial DHL Airways citizenship case has scheduled a pre-hearing conference for May 27. Ronnie L. Yoder, the Department of Transportation’s chief administrative law judge, has to issue a recommended decision by Oct. 31.
