DHL Airways announces relocation of corporate headquarters to Miami, Florida

DHL Airways, Inc., a leading U.S. provider of air cargo services, today announced the relocation of its corporate headquarters to Miami, Florida from Chicago, Illinois. Effective May 15, 2003, the company will assume corporate operations at One Biscayne Tower in downtown Miami. “Chicago is truly a city that works and it has afforded DHL Airways a great business climate to grow and prosper in,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John H. Dasburg. “However, we have restructured the management team for DHL Airways and given the geographic locations of several of our members, it just makes good sense to relocate our headquarters location.”

Franchisees Sue UPS Over Conversion to UPS Store

A group of Mail Box Etc. franchise owners have filed suit in California state court alleging that United Parcel Service Inc. is violating state franchise laws. Two years ago, UPS bought Mail Boxes Etc. and this year the Atlanta-based shipping company offered franchise holders discounts on shipping services if they would rename their outlets “The UPS Store” and agree to other operating changes. The suit filed April 25 in California Superior Court in Los Angeles alleges that UPS violated the California franchise investment law by failing to properly register the new franchise and provide store operators with a uniform franchise offering. It also alleges that UPS made “earnings claims” about The UPS Store without providing franchisees with the backup and disclosure required by California law.

USPS announces new mail contract aimed at better service

The U.S. Postal Service today awarded 18 competitively bid air transportation contracts to 34 airlines. The value of these contracts will be dependent on the
individual air carrier’s price, capacity and service performance. The contracts will take effect June 28 and are expected to increase efficiency and improve service. Total dollar value of the contracts will not be available until the end of each fiscal year when total mail volumes flown by the airlines is known. Last year, the Postal Service paid the airlines approximately USD370 million.

International and Non-Package Segments Drive UPS 1st Quarter Results

UPS today reported solid first quarter results driven by its international and non-package businesses, with both segments generating strong revenue growth and record-setting profits. For the quarter ended March 31, 2003, revenue totaled USD8.02 billion, up 5.8% from the USD7.58 billion reported during the prior-year period. Consolidated operating profit fell 0.2% to USD945 million. Net income increased 24.4% to USD611 million compared to the prior year’s USD491 million.

GAO Criticizes USPS Delay on Anthrax Test

The U.S. Postal Service violated federal regulations and undermined management’s credibility when it failed to disclose anthrax test results promptly to workers at a contaminated Connecticut mail facility, the General Accounting Office charged in a report released yesterday. The GAO said postal officials did not comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules in early 2002 when they did not fulfill a request for test results from union representatives at the Southern Connecticut Processing and Distribution Center in Wallingford.
