Smaller independent logistics firms will be the target of Europeans looking to expand in North America

Acquisitive European logistics organizations still have the North American market in their sights despite tough economic conditions and the challenges of finding suitable targets. As economic conditions improve, analysts expect merger and acquisition activity to pick up fast.

The pool of top targets is smaller after the acquisitions of the last two years or so. “Most of the prime U.S. candidates have been taken,” said Dick Armstrong of Stoughton, Wis.-based logistics management consulting firm Armstrong & Associates Inc. For buyers to come into this market “and make a dramatic impact,” they would have to go after companies the size and caliber of Schneider Logistics or Ryder System, he suggested.

Lynx/USPS tie-up gets off to a great start

Lynx Express is sending 1,000 packages a week to US homes and businesses through its new partnership with the US Postal Service (USPS).
Chief executive David Burtenshaw said he believed Lynx could attract 5% of the Europe/US market, which he estimated at £1bn ( t1.6bn), inside two years.
The four to five-day US Priority Package service is claimed to provide a “closed loop” similar to the integrators, but at around 60% of their overnight rates, said Burtenshaw.

Mailers council calls on White House to create postal reform commission to study postal service

The Mailers Council, the nation’s largest coalition of mailers and mailing associations, today called on the White House to create a Presidential Commission on Postal Reform to evaluate the United States Postal Service (USPS).
In a letter to President George Bush, Mailers Council Executive Director Bob McLean notes that the USPS has found it increasingly difficult to provide universal service at an affordable price. The USPS reported a loss of $1.7 billion in 2001 and projects a deficit of $1.5 billion this fiscal year.
Annual retirement plan costs will escalate to $14 billion by 2010. The difficulties of the USPS are so severe the General Accounting Office put the agency on its High-Risk List, primarily because GAO believes billions of dollars in taxpayer money are at risk.
