USPS: A Valued Partner

The following is a commentary by Jerry Hempstead, Vice President of National Accounts, DHL, which was prepared for Traffic World magazine.

Innovation may not be the first word that springs to mind when thinking of the U.S. Postal Service. However, for the home parcel delivery business, the USPS has been at the forefront of innovation as it has coped with new competition and critical changes in the behavior of its customers. US Postal Service ends fiscal year USD3 billion in the black

The US Postal Service finished its fiscal year just over USD3 billion in the black, helping the agency reduce its debt and keep a promise that postal rates won’t go up until 2006. Net income of USD3.1 billion was down from USD3.9 billion a year earlier, but was better than officials had expected thanks to cost cutting and an increase in advertising mail, according to postal chief financial officer Richard J. Strasser. But Strasser also noted a third annual decline in the volume of first-class mail – the cards and letters that account for the majority of the income for the post office. “The financial results are masking changing circumstances,” Strasser said. Increases in first-class mail have helped cover the rising costs of inflation in the past. Now advertising mail is the growing segment, but volume can vary widely in response to business conditions and it contributes far less to the agency’s bottom line.

Report on USPS mail scanning initiative

Hosted as usual in Nice, France, it brought together 60 senior executives from the global industry and focused on the key areas of doing better business, outsourcing, technology and alliances. After a general overview of Continental Airlines’ route network, the fleet (including 18 B777-200s) and the company’s cargo division, he presented details of the USPS mail scanning and cargo revenue management initiatives on which his division had worked. Both initiatives had substantially improved revenues, Anderson said. “Any time we have opportunities within the cargo department to leverage margins and revenues, we get quite a bit of interest at the executive level,” Anderson said.
