US Postal Service recognised for diversity

The U.S. Postal Service has been named one of the 50 Best Companies for Minorities for the fifth year in a row by leading business magazine FORTUNE. The Postal Service ranked sixth on the list this year. The rankings appear in the current issue.

USPS Gets 140 Replies to First-Class/Standard Proposal

More than 140 mailers and mailing organizations responded to a U.S. Postal Service proposed rule that the agency said seeks to clarify the differences between a personalized Standard Mail piece and a personal First-Class Mail piece. The comment period closed Friday. As of press time Friday afternoon, the USPS said it had received 141 comments and that it was still collecting them. Most of the comments came from nonprofit mailers. The rule proposal was published April 19. It calls for an exclusive-purpose test in which personal information would be permitted at Standard rates only when advertising or solicitation is the exclusive purpose of the piece and personal information is included solely to increase the effectiveness of the ad or solicitation.

USPS files BankOne and Discover proposals

The Postal Service has filed two experimental mail classification cases with the Postal Rate Commission proposing Negotiated Service Agreements (NSA) with BankOne and Discover Financial Services.

“Bringing these two negotiated service agreements forward shows that we are committed to providing more pricing innovation to the marketplace,” said the Postal Service’s Chief Marketing Officer Anita J. Bizzotto.

US Postal Service to use GM’s fuel cell van

The United States Postal Service has announced it will lease a fuel cell vehicle from the General Motors Corp. to deliver mail in the Washington area.

Federal officials said the two-year agreement for the use of a GM minivan represents the first commercial application of a GM fuel cell vehicle within the United States.

US postal governors approve major capital projects

The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors approved several major capital projects today at its monthly meeting.

The Board approved funding for Surface Visibility, the third phase of the Surface Air Support System (SASS). Surface Visibility is the third piece of the overall Transportation Visibility strategy. In the first phase, an infrastructure was developed to track FedEx and Amtrak shipments. In the second phase, SASS was expanded to include commercial air visibility. In this phase, the systems will track several visibility points from container loading to the unloading of both Postal Service and postal customer trailers. Wireless scanners will be used to capture data. The system will be deployed at 129 facilities.
