UPS teams up with US Postal’s Parcel Select

United Parcel Service is to introduce a customised service combining its ground delivery service with the US Postal Service’s Parcel Select.

UPS will use Parcel Select for deliveries up to five pounds, primarily to rural or super-rural areas. After moving these packages through its ground network, UPS will identify those for delivery to the rural areas and hand them over to the local post office for final delivery.

Industry insiders have suggested that FedEx might announce a similar partnership soon.

USPS seeks to tighten security

The Postal Service has proposed a new rule requiring sender identification of discount-rate mail, which is considered the first step toward removing the anonymity of all mailings. Covered under the new proposal would be first-class mail, periodicals, standard mail or package-services mailing eligible for any discounted postage rate. The new proposed regulations were prompted by the anthrax mailings two years ago this month that killed five people and sickened 13 others. The sender was never caught.

The new initiative hinges on the Postal Service’s One Code vision, in which a single bar code will be used to identify the 200 billion items delivered each year. Postal Service officials will scan mail as it comes into a post office and then use various computer systems to track it as it moves from origin to destination.

Azure Dynamics and USPS sign prototype agreement

Azure Dynamics Corporation, a leading developer of hybrid electric powertrains for commercial vehicles and United States Postal Service, the world’s leading provider of mailing and delivery services, are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement whereby Azure will test and retrofit two USPS vehicles with Azure’s “Smart Energy Management” hybrid technology.

Azure will develop a prototype gas hybrid electric powertrain for USPS’s carrier route vehicle (CRV) as well as a prototype diesel hybrid electric powertrain for the USPS two-ton step van. USPS operates approximately 140,000 CRV’s and 10,000 step vans.
