US Postal Reform Would Get Big Boost With White House Backing

Postal reform could move ahead provided it receives strong backing from the White House, the chairman of the House of Representatives committee that includes oversight of the U.S. Postal Service told attendees yesterday at the Direct Marketing Association’s 2003 Government Affairs Conference here. “If the White House is not willing to go with it, I just think it’s going to be very difficult [to get a bill passed] on the Hill,” said Rep. Tom Davis, R-VA, chairman of the Government Reform Committee. “Without them pushing it, without our leadership response to that, you’re just not going to get Congress eager to make decisions [such as closing] post offices and to start angering interest groups.”

USPS Board OKs Filing for Parcel Return Rate

The U.S. Postal Service soon may offer reduced rates for shippers participating in Parcel Return Service, a proposed consumer-to-business service. The USPS Board of Governors authorized at its monthly meeting in Chicago yesterday a filing with the Postal Rate Commission to seek an experimental classification for Parcel Return Service. Rates for the new service would recognize the savings generated by the merchant’s pickup of the package.

It has been on-stream in St Ann since last Tuesday.

GAO Criticizes USPS Delay on Anthrax Test

The U.S. Postal Service violated federal regulations and undermined management’s credibility when it failed to disclose anthrax test results promptly to workers at a contaminated Connecticut mail facility, the General Accounting Office charged in a report released yesterday. The GAO said postal officials did not comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules in early 2002 when they did not fulfill a request for test results from union representatives at the Southern Connecticut Processing and Distribution Center in Wallingford.
