U.S. Postal Regulator Approves Online Filing

The U.S. Postal Rate Commission, bowing to modernity, wants parties filing documents with it to do so electronically over the Internet. ‘This will allow the commission and others to apply modern technology to certain routine procedures,’ the Postal Rate Commission said in a proposed rule published Tuesday. ‘This should reduce the burden and expense associated with traditional hard copy filing,’ the commission said, specifying postage as one of the areas where savings will be achieved. The commission said it has ‘preliminarily concluded that it is feasible and desirable to make electronic filing of documents over the Internet the standard procedure for filing official documents with the commission.’

DMA Calls Presidential Postal Commission Premature

The Direct Marketing Association expressed concern yesterday over the decision by the Mailers Council to call for a presidential commission to study changes to the U.S. Postal Service.
In a letter to President Bush sent yesterday, Mailers Council executive director Bob McLean called on the White House to create a commission on postal reform to evaluate the USPS.

Lynx/USPS tie-up gets off to a great start

Lynx Express is sending 1,000 packages a week to US homes and businesses through its new partnership with the US Postal Service (USPS).
Chief executive David Burtenshaw said he believed Lynx could attract 5% of the Europe/US market, which he estimated at £1bn ( t1.6bn), inside two years.
The four to five-day US Priority Package service is claimed to provide a “closed loop” similar to the integrators, but at around 60% of their overnight rates, said Burtenshaw.
