The U.S. Postal Service is installing barcodes inside select mailboxes nationwide as part of effort to track and improve mail delivery service

today announced unique enhancements to its USPS eBillPay and Priority Mail
services that tie electronic financial transactions to the Postal Service’s
traditional delivery of packages. These enhancements are a milestone in the
implementation of the original plan that was announced with the national
launch of USPS eBillPay in April 2000, and provide consumers with the ability
to send money and pay for merchandise at the time of delivery electronically,
securely and conveniently.
William J. Henderson, the former U.S. Postmaster General, in an article that appeared in the Washington Post: “As the postmaster general until I retired three months ago, I oversaw the negotiation of the FedEx deal. And I continue to see it as an innovative solution for a Postal Service struggling to remain competitive under market conditions that have changed strikingly over the past decade. But such alliances with private business don’t go nearly far enough. What the Postal Service needs now is nothing short of privatization.”
