Viet Nam Post Office To Spin Off From State Telecom Giant

The nation’s postal service will be reorganised under a plan approved by the Prime Minister earlier this month. Under the plan, the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) would spin off the new Viet Nam Postal Corporation with a total equity of over VND 8 trillion (USD 500 million), according to Deputy Minister of Post and Telematics Nguyen Thanh Hung. The change would be effected July 1.

The new corporation would continue performing postal services now under the purview of VNPT. It was also expected to develop and manage public postal networks, provide financial and banking services, and co-operate with telecommunications firms to provide ICT services.

The goal was for the postal service to cover its own costs within seven to eight years, he added. The corporation’s affiliates would include provincial and municipal post offices and enterprises in which it would hold over 50 per cent equity, such as the Postal Express and Postage Stamp joint stock companies.

Korea Post makes its present felt across world

In general, it is safe to say that any country’s postal agency pays little attention to things outside its national boundary because postal services are basically about domestic business.

Of course, there are global businesses such as international mailing or parcel services but they typically don’t account for a significant chunk of revenues or profits.

However, Korea Post seems to be different _ the country’s postal service has constantly pinned its eyes on overseas businesses and events in a variety of segments.

Jung Kyung-won, who took charge of Korea Post in April, amply demonstrates the agency’s efforts to take an opportunity not only in Korea but also across the globe through his schedule this week.

On Tuesday, Chung met with his Vietnamese counterpart Do Ngoc Binh in Hanoi to exchange a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Under the MOU, the two countries agreed to cooperate in sharing expertise in postal services, exchanging experts and developing new businesses.

Once completed, the network in Southeast Asia will cover almost 60 per cent of the region and link over 120 cities across 4,000 km.

First introduced at the end of 2005, the first phase of TNT’s Asia Road Network linked Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. With 24×7 real-time Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) tracking of TNT’s container trucks, the service resulted in double-digit growth in overall volumes within a year, particularly among customers with high-value goods such as electronic, automotive and computing components.
