DHL gets green light to start business in Vietnam

The Vietnamese government has given the green light for German DHL express group to establish a joint venture with a local delivery company, an official said Wednesday.

The government “agreed in principle for DHL to set up an express delivery service joint-venture with the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT),” an official from the planning and investment ministry told AFP.

DHL will hold 51 percent of the company’s shares while the rest belongs to VNPT, the official said, adding that the 5.5 million dollar venture is scheduled to operate next year in eight cities and provinces.

DHL first came to Vietnam through a sales agent in 1988, a company source said without elaborating.

TNT launches Asia road express service

TNT yesterday launched an Asia road express service which by 2007 will be able to truck small cargo from Singapore to Chinese cities. The new service may also see shippers beginning to opt out of both sea and air freight for some cargo with a more cost effective road transport option. This may result in some losses for both shipping lines and airfreight operators in Asia but TNT, however, sees the service as complementing the region’s well developed air and sea freight routes with the potential of significantly cutting logistics costs for businesses. It has launched what is claimed to be Asia’s first and only integrated network spanning Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, and plans to expand it to link up more than 120 cities across 4,000 kilometres when Vietnam and Cambodia are added in the first half of next year. The global express forwarder hopes to extend the road links eventually to China by 2007.

Vietnam Post and telecommunication sectors to be separated

Administration of post and telecommunication operations is to be partitioned in 2007 in a plan approved by the Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. The move aims to bring Vietnam’s postal services up to par with other countries in the region and spur development of both sectors by 2010. Under the approved project, the postal and telecommunication sectors are to work independently to provide internationally-recognised services. By 2010 Vietnam should have 13,000 outlets nationwide, ranging from large post offices to small village kiosks, each serving about 7,000 residents on avarage. In the PM’s decision, he stressed the emphasis the Government places on domestic and foreign economic sectors investing in postal industry development. He said the Government encourages foreign investment of up to 100 per cent.
