Vietnam Post & Telecoms Corporation to be divided from Jan 2005

The Vietnam Post & Telecoms Corporation (VNPT) has said it is finalising necessary procedures to split into two separate corporations from January 1, 2005, with one specialising in telecoms and the other in postal services.

The new corporations will be called the Vietnam Telecoms Corporation and the Vietnam Postal Corporation, which will be comprised of the Inter-provincial & International Postal Co. , the Central Newspaper Publishing Co. , the Postal Savings Co. and post offices at city and provincial level. This is interpreted as the first step towards the establishment of a telecoms and postal group in Vietnam in the 2005-06 period. The group will comprise independent companies mainly focusing on telecoms, information technology and postal services.

Foreign joint ventures allowed in Vietnam postal services

100percent foreign-owned businesses are not yet allowed to engage in local and international mail delivery services. According to Government Decree 157/2004 giving guidelines to implement the Ordinance on Post and Telecommunications, foreign-invested joint ventures (JVs) will be allowed to operate international mail delivery service with the condition that the capital contribution ratio of the foreign party is determined by the Government.

DHL launches direct service to Vietnam

DHL began flying its first transport aircraft into Vietnam last Friday tripling its cargo capacity in the country and increasing its daily service hours to customers.

A Boeing 737 will fly four times a week, linking Vietnam, especially Ho Chi Minh City, directly with DHL’s regional hub in Bangkok.This will increase the company’s carrying capacity into and out of Vietnam from the earlier four tonnes to 13.5 tonnes and push back its closing time from 1pm to 5pm.

“We have invested heavily to bring this aircraft into Vietnamese skies and are extremely confident of success because of Vietnam’s booming economy,” said Stephen Fenwick, South Asian and Indochina’s Area Director for DHL Express.

TNT names regional GM for South East Asia

TNT has appointed Michael Drake as regional general manager for TNT Express in South East Asia.

Drake will be responsible for the company’s business in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia, as well as agent operations in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. These markets contributed nearly one third to TNT’s revenue in Asia last year.
