Publishers take issue with rising postal costs

Postal issues continue to be a headache for publishers the world over and price based reform is currently under review by operators in the UK, US and Australia.
In October representatives from the Periodical Publishers Association’s (PPA) postal committee urged the UK’s national postal operator, Royal Mail, to find an acceptable way forward on the size-based pricing issue which continues to threaten the country’s magazine industry.

Mail Well executives file certifications with the SEC

Mail-Well, Inc. announced that Paul V. Reilly, chairman, president and chief executive officer, and Michel P. Salbaing, senior vice president and chief financial officer, submitted certifications today to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) with respect to the Form 10-Q filed with the SEC today, in accordance with Section 906 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

Headquartered in Englewood, Colo., Mail-Well specializes in three multi-billion market segments in the highly fragmented printing industry: commercial printing, envelopes and printed office products. These three divisions achieved sales of $1.9 billion in 2001. Mail-Well divested its prime label division in May 2002. Mail-Well has over 11,000 employees and more than 80 printing facilities and numerous sales offices throughout North America.

Royal Mail reins in the colour this christmas

With Slade and Status Quo blasting out of the jukebox, and excesses of food and booze, the modern Yuletide experience is not known for its self-restraint.

This year, however, one festive ritual will be somewhat toned down – sending your greetings cards.

After years favouring rather garish designs, the Royal Mail has revealed a set of Christmas stamps that are distinctly on the understated side.

The themes are traditional enough: holly with its bright red berries, a few leaves of ivy, a pinecone and some mistletoe.

Postal staff sort out backlog

Thirty Royal Mail staff worked through the weekend trying to clear a backlog of 50,000 letters at the Cheltenham sorting office.

The extra workers were drafted into Swindon Road where they sorted the post ready for delivery later this week.

Gywn Williams, sector operations manager for Gloucestershire, said first and second class mail will not be affected.

Post Office takes first steps towards insurance business

The still state-owned Polish post office Poczta Polska (PP) has applied to sector regulators for an insurance licence which would enable it to take its first steps onto new financial products markets. The new firm would sell property, health and life insurance. The application is part of a strategy that hopes to establish a capital group supervising separate operations in four different areas of business: financial products, Internet, traditional postal services and logistics/courier services.
