Maltapost to shed 226 jobs

Company working with unions and government for redeployment of workers

Maltapost is to make 226 workers redundant, the company Chief Executive Robert Lake said.

Maltapost said the move is necessary to sustain the future economic viability of the company.

The job losses will be phased in over the next year and will see the Maltapost’s workforce reduced from 816 to 500 by September 2003.

Mayne gets $456m for transport arm

Mayne yesterday completed the shift to becoming a focused health company, selling off its transport arm for $456 million.

Lindsay Fox’s unlisted Linfox group, Paul Little’s listed Toll Holdings and Deutsche Post’s DHL divided the spoils between them.

The trade sale means an end to the demerger process to float the transport business under the brand name Loomis.

Royal Mail shake up sends Hays into slide

Shares in business services group Hays have plunged to a seven-year low after a shock profits warning.

The company blamed pressure in the business post market from Allan Leighton’s revamped Royal Mail.

The shares collapsed by 203/4p to 893/4p. New chief executive Colin Matthews arrives today, facing the possibility that Hays, whose market value has dived to £1.5bn, will be kicked out of the elite FTSE 100 index.
