UK/US air liberalisation in disarray

UK efforts to secure a limited liberalisation of air services with the US were in disarray on Wednesday night as Alistair Darling, UK transport secretary, bowed to heavy pressure from UK and European passenger and cargo interests opposed to any deal.

The UK transport department said the US had been told “not to expect further proposals for a few weeks.”

It said it had embarked on further analysis of the consequences for UK aviation of agreeing to a so-called “open skies” deal for air cargo services, which has been sought by the US.

Romania Post rolls out SkyPak Express Service

SkyPak is the newest international express service in Romania. It was created as a result of a partnership between the Romanian Post and TNT Romania. SkyPak service is provided in all customs-assisted post offices and in all express items handling points – 94 post offices at the national level.

Couriers urge China Post to withdraw rules

International express operators yesterday appealed to China Post to pull back from an embarrassing conflict by withdrawing new regulations the couriers say will damage the development of an efficient logistics industry.

The operators, represented by the Conference of Asia-Pacific Express Carriers (Capec), said they were unlikely to file for “entrustment” by next Tuesday’s deadline.

A spokesman for Capec said entrustment – essentially making China Post the regulator of companies with which it competes – flies in the face of the “economic liberalisation and fair competition” enshrined in World Trade Organisation principles.

Finnish Post plans early morning mail deliveries

The Finnish Post wants to make the deliveries earlier.

According to the plans, most Finns would receive their mail and newspapers before leaving for work.

Current deliveries mean that most Finns get the mail between 0900 and noon, while a small number of Finns have to wait until after 1300 for the mail.
