Deutsche Post Relocates U.S. Headquarters

Deutsche Post Global Mail, a shipper of U.S. business mail internationally and a cross-border mailer worldwide, has completed the relocation of its U.S. headquarters to Fairfax County.

Deutsche Post Global Mail is leasing a building in Herndon, near Washington Dulles International Airport. The headquarters employs 100 people. ‘Deutsche Post is a strong growth company that we are proud to welcome to the community,’ said Gerald L. Gordon, president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority. ‘This is a great example of how Fairfax County works for foreign-owned companies looking for a U.S. location.’

MPs to back £210M sub-post office closure package

MPs were tonight set to approve a £210 million state aid package for urban sub-post offices which will see up to 3,000 close.

Sub-postmasters will be offered more than two years’ pay to leave the business and remaining branches will be given up to £10,000 each for improvements.

Trade Minister Stephen Timms told the Commons there was simply not enough business to sustain the present network of 9,000 local branches.

Authority defends new DHL terminal

Despite questions about its impact on existing terminal operators at Chek Lap Kok, DHL Worldwide Express’s planned new express cargo terminal will help Hong Kong achieve its goal of becoming the leading logistics centre for southern China, the Airport Authority says.

According to Hans Bakker, the authority’s commercial director, the ultimate aim is to take advantage of production growth in the Pearl River Delta and the increasing sophistication of its output.

3,000 axed sub-postmasters to be offered two years pay

Sub-postmasters will be offered two years’ pay to leave the business under “vital changes” to the postal network which will involve the closure of up to 3,000 post offices, it was announced today.

Investment grants of up to £10,000 will be offered to remaining branches to help improve facilities such as more counter positions and longer hours.

The changes will be made under a £210 million Government aid scheme which is expected to be given the go ahead by MPs tonight.

A clear mandate for open access

Twenty UK parliamentarians and RFG members visited Cologne, Frankfurt and Ludwigshafen last month to observe rail freight in action, including post and parcel, intermodal and air services, as well as road, rail and river terminals and BASF’s major operations. We also met DB Cargo, infrastructure provider DB Netz and two independent freight train operators, Connex and Rail4Chem.
We were particularly interested to see how rail freight was operating on the continent, the responses of customers, and the extent to which open access, officially starting in March 2003, had already brought competition for traction, and the effect this was having on customer attitudes.
