TPG receives UK interim licence to deliver bulk mail

Mail, Express and Logistics company TPG N.V. has announced today that its subsidiary TPG Post UK Limited has received an interim licence to provide bulk mail and consolidation services in the UK market. The interim licence will enable TPG Post UK to start a pilot service. TPG Post UK has also applied for a full-term licence, which the company expects to receive in 2003.

TPG intends to provide services to large companies, publishers, mailing houses and direct marketers who need a reliable, competitively priced service. The company will target customers with large mailings who have individual mailings of over 4,000 items.

Post Office gives up on germ zapping machinery

A year after the anthrax-by-mail crisis, the U.S. Postal Service has abandoned its plans of installing expensive electron-beam devices in many mail sorting facilities to zap harmful bacteria.

The agency says it has since shifted its goal toward finding hand-held devices that would allow postal carriers to detect harmful materials, much the way a Geiger counter detects radiation.

Royal Mail hit by strike

Hundreds of Royal Mail workers walked out yesterday in protest over threatened job losses.

The one-day strike was sparked by plans to sell off part of the business, which supplies 17,500 post offices with cash and stamps.
