Italy Freezes Postal Tariffs for Three Months

The government blocked announced price hikes for public utilities Friday in an attempt to calm consumer outrage over inflation. A decree passed during a Cabinet meeting freezes the tariffs of electricity, gas and postal services until Nov. 30, said European Affairs Minister Rocco Buttiglione. Preliminary figures released this week by the Italian national statistics bureau Istat showed consumer prices rose 0.1 percent in August, or 2.3 percent since the same period last year. Consumer groups have complained that true inflation rates are far higher. They say the basket of goods and services the government uses to monitor prices is outdated, leading to flawed figures. Premier Silvio Berlusconi has blamed price increases on the introduction of the euro. Many consumers accused retailers of rounding up prices when the new currency was introduced in January.

Deutsche Post launches onto the bond market

German post office company Deutsche Post is preparing a bond in five and ten year tranches for up to €1bn via Credit Suisse First Boston, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley. Meanwhile the flotation of a jumbo bond from the Republic of Italy is closing on 29 August.

Multi-Modal Service Speeds Shipments Across the U.S.

UPS (NYSE:UPS) has launched a new ocean option for shippers who manufacture goods in China and Brazil and import into the United States. The new service dramatically speeds the movement of ocean-transported goods by minimizing stops on land. The new service, UPS Trade Direct Ocean, transforms ocean-containers into pre-labeled small packages or less-than-truckload shipments. Shipments move from the ports to nearby UPS freight facilities with minimal handling, processing and storage.

Exel still talks a good success story

Exel’s half-year results indicate the problems of UK logistics companies at present. Its contract logistics business in the UK suffered a 2% increase in revenue to £584m but a profit dip of 8% to just £28.9m.
