German postal and logistics giant Deutsche Post World
Net is in negotiations with several large industrial firms over logistics
outsourcing contracts, chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel told Reuters on
Wednesday.” The article states: “Zumwinkel declined to name the companies
involved but said he was particularly interested in Europe and in the
automotive, information technology and trade sectors. The Deutsche Post
chief executive reiterated that he remained interested in expanding the
group’s activities through acquisitions. ‘There are very many opportunities
on the table at present and they cover the whole world,’ he said. Logistics
subsidiary Danzas announced earlier on Wednesday that it was buying Austrian
transport group Cargoplan/Cargoline, with annual sales of 80 million euros,
to expand its business in Austria and eastern Europe. Zumwinkel also
repeated forecasts made last week that Deutsche Post aimed to increase
profits and sales by five percent this year. No predictions about 2002 could
be made until early next year once it was clear how the fourth quarter of
2001 had gone, he added.”
Deutsche Post World Net AG unit DHL International, together with its US unit, is expected to contribute a loss of 90 mln eur to its German parent for the 2001 full year, Deutsche Post chief financial officer Edgar Ernst told analysts in a telephone conference.
“DHL International including the US is expected to generate a negative contribution to Deutsche Post of some 90 mln eur,” Ernst said.
Ernst said excluding the US unit, the full year EBIT margin for DHL International would be “approximately 2 pct”.
DHL’s US unit, however, is expected to generate a loss for the full year due to economic conditions and the effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks, he said.
Ernst said Deutsche Post holds 46.6 pct in DHL International and will raise this to around 51 pct in early 2002.

Energy, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Amar Leo Moggie said the Government is of the view that the MCMC is ready to assume the role and regulate both activities. “It will not be an easy job,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur after a ceremony to hand over the functions from the ministry to the MCMC yesterday. Under the amended Postal Services Act (1991) and Digital Signature Act (1997) that were passed in Parliament on September 27 2001, the MCMC is to be the watchdog for both postal services and digital signature certification.
