TPG forecasts more international alliances

Dutch postal and logistics company TPG NV (TP) said Tuesday that it expects more international alliances if European Union governments further liberalize the E.U.’s EUR80 billion a year postal market. ‘We foresee international alliances such as with Singapore Post,’ TPG spokesman Rutger Goethart said. ‘There’s huge potential growth internationally.’

Airlines may decline loan offer

Several US airlines may decide not to take up the largest portion of the aid offered under the federal assistance package, despite having lobbied intensely for a government bail-out of the industry.

The Air Transport Association estimates that only half of the 10 largest carriers will apply for loan guarantees offered by the government, which could total $10bn.

The guarantees are in addition to the $5bn in cash already granted under the bail-out scheme.

Postal workers condemn job cuts

POSTAL union CWU dismissed Consignia’s decision to axe over 15,000 jobs yesterday as a “madcap” scheme.

CWU deputy general secretary John Keggie said that the government “must ask how a business that was in profitability for 20 years before commercial freedom was granted is now in such a financial mess.”

Consignia admitted the job cuts in an internal briefing sent to managers.

The company argued that the business was moving into loss and that there must be cost cutting over the next 18 months to create a much leaner operation.

The briefing stated: “We want to take out 15 per cent of our cost base, which equals £1.2 billion.

“This means reducing our employee and non-employee costs by 15 per cent. We must do this by March 2003.”
