Postal operators must focus on innovation

“Innovation is an essential element in planning and preparing for the future. Being innovative is the only way the postal sector can remain competitive,” said Edouard Dayan, Director General of the Universal Postal Union.

Over the past few years, Dayan said, postal operators worldwide have shown an ability to innovate, especially in creating services that facilitate e-commerce, an industry fuelling the growth of parcels and small packets.

He cited the development of e-services and payment services as two areas in which postal operators have made great strides in order to meet customers’ need for new ways of sending messages and making financial transactions as they increasingly use the Internet to conduct daily activities.

According to UPU statistics, more than 80 pct of postal operators in industrialized countries and 40 pct in developing countries offer innovative messaging services such as secure e-mail, hybrid mail and electronic changes of address.

NZ Post profit up, but dividend down

New Zealand Post lifted annual net profit 26.9 percent to NZD 110.2 million, but its dividend payment to the Government will be 23.7 percent down at NZD 23.5 million.

The result for the year to the end of June was achieved on revenue up 7.9 percent to NZD 1.29 billion, and compared with net profit the previous year, restated for new accounting standards, of NZD 86.8m.

Chief executive John Allen said that in addition to a strong contribution from subsidiary Kiwibank, the NZ Post Group’s performance was well supported by a higher than expected contribution by the Datamail Group.

Traditional postal and retail businesses were affected by the economic slowdown during the second half of the year.

Factors contributing to the rise in net profit included a NZD 5.9m lift in Kiwibank’s net profit to NZD 36.8m, and a non-recurring gain of NZD 24.8m from the creation in June of joint venture Express Couriers Australia. NZ Post’s operating profit for the year rose 21.2 percent to NZD114.4m.

Mr Allen said the fall in dividend from the state-owned enterprise was partly due to the fact dividends were not paid on Kiwibank profits, as it was felt investment continued to be needed in that business. 1 USD = 1.45396 NZD

Postal Union hopes to use new delivery project early next year

Q-Post chairman al-Ali with UPU and other delegates at the meeting of the interim working group in Doha yesterday

Members of the quality steering committee of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) expressed confidence that the radio frequency identification project (RFID), aimed at improving the quality of postal delivery, would be successfully implemented in several countries across the world, most probably by early next year.

Experts, associating with the UPU’s initiative, are currently in Doha as part of the global monitoring system’s (GMS) interim working group’s third meeting in the city. The meeting will conclude tomorrow.

As part of the project, meetings are scheduled to be held also in Washington, Rio De Janerio, Lisbon, Botswana, Helsinki, and Japan. Some of the meetings have already been completed.

He said the core group had come out with some effective solutions which he said could be beneficial to all UPU members, in particular those in the developing world.
Jan Sertons (TNT, The Netherlands), Kai Perasalo (Itella, Finland), Antonio Caeiro, (UPU, Portugal) and Sakae Kamibayashi (Japan Post Service) are among the experts attending the meeting.

The UPU calls on the market for ideas on ".post"

UPU works to establish .post, an Internet top-level sponsored domain. The Universal Postal Union, on behalf of Posts worldwide and associated industry bodies, is looking to enhance access to universal postal service in the electronic world by establishing a top-level domain on the Internet – .post.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has assigned .post to the UPU. This means that Posts worldwide could one day use the .post domain to offer new electronic services, or provide citizens with an electronic address that matches their physical address, for example. A top-level domain would also enable many developing Posts to enter the electronic world more easily, as well as helping Posts develop a brand that would be recognized the world over.

For the UPU, .post is the ideal way to create a universal electronic postal service that fulfils the expectations of citizens and governments worldwide in terms of security and stability. .post would allow the UPU to create a global electronic postal network establishing more than 660,000 post offices via the Internet, alongside the single territory for the exchange of international physical mail.
