Labour news from UNI global union

An extraordinary meeting of UNI Post & Logistics global union has given the go ahead to step up campaigning across the sector. A key target is DHL.

A global alliance of DHL trade unions is being launched to build union membership and to win a global agreement that recognises labour rights wherever DHL operates around the world.

UNI – which already has DHL organising projects in Hong Kong and Latin America – will direct the campaign and help develop the research on which specific activities will be based. Verdi, which is the home union for Deutsche Post, will also play a key role.
It was agreed to set up a Steering Group to oversee the campaign that will also lay the foundations for future campaigns in other post and logistic multinationals.

The meeting agreed to step up cooperation with the International Transport Workers Federation as boundaries between postal operators and transport/logistics giants become increasingly blurred with de-regulation of postal services well underway in Europe and Japan.

UNI Post & Logistics is to set up a UNI Regulation Watch to assist affiliates in challenging the increasingly political decisions of postal regulators.

Many of their decisions determine how effective protection will be for the universal postal service, on which communities and jobs depend. Unions will have to become increasingly nimble as new and often-small private operators increasingly employ workers in the sector.

Unions are to be encouraged to help develop new services in the traditional postal operators – like delivering remittance money across the world for migrant workers to support families back home. The aim is to challenge the growing trend by governments under a political agenda to cut back the activities of traditional operators and allow outside private companies to cherry pick their services.

In Europe protection for traditional postal operators will disappear from 2011/13 as a result of a decision by the European Union while Japan Post is already in a ten-year process of division and privatisation.

“Europe has come up with a rotten piece of legislation,” UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings told the meeting in Nyon, Switzerland. “The EU has washed its hands of protecting the postal service and we have to help national trade unions defend this key service to the public.”

UPS expanding global service in wake of US economic downturn

United Parcel Service (UPS) is expanding an international air-freight service that guarantees delivery dates in the wake of a slowing US economy, the Toronto Star reports.
The UPS Express Freight service will more than triple the amount of express lanes currently served, UPS officials said.
The service, which now reaches 52 countries, is designed to provide guaranteed time-definite, overnight-to-three day door-to-door delivery including routine customs clearance to major global metropolitan areas.
UPS has been boosting international revenue at a faster rate than in the US, where the economic expansion is waning, according to the Toronto Star. The report said UPS international operations accounted for 28 pct of the company’s total revenue in 2006.

Decisions on Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Post Office Branches Announced

Post Office Ltd today announced decisions on the future of Post Office® branches across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight following a six week public consultation ending on 26 November. Post Office® services will be provided through a network of 300 branches, which supports the national accessibility criteria introduced by the Government and ensures that 99.5 pct of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight’s population will either see no change to their existing branch or will remain within one mile (by road distance) of an alternative branch.

The plan confirmed today means that 61 branches will close in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight with the first closures scheduled to take place in February 2008. These branches were detailed in the Area Plan proposal published on 16 October 2007.

The replacement of eight branches by outreach solutions was also confirmed in principle today subject to final agreement with Postwatch. However for six of the branches, where Post Office Ltd is still to finalise detailed proposals a further consultation process will be held. Information on these proposals will be published shortly.

Following a review of issues raised during consultation Goodworth Clatford Post Office branch, originally proposed for closure will now remain open. Feedback showed concerns about a range of issues and that a disproportionate number of closures were proposed on the southern side of Andover, with the nearest branches to Goodworth Clatford – Anna Valley to the north and Leckford to the south – both being proposed for closure.

UPS launches new global air freight portfolio

UPS launched a simplified global portfolio for shipping air freight, including a substantially expanded express freight option with guaranteed door-to-door service.

The new air freight portfolio features a greatly expanded international express service called UPS ExpressSM Freight. It more than triples the number of express lanes currently served and provides guaranteed time-definite, overnight-to-three day door-to-door delivery including routine customs clearance to major global metropolitan areas.

For less time-sensitive global movements, UPS offers two non-guaranteed alternatives: UPS Air Freight DirectSM is a one-to-three day airport-to-airport service, and UPS Air Freight ConsolidatedSM is a three-to-five day airport-to-airport service. Both services are available worldwide and offer pickup, delivery and customs clearance as optional features. Freight shipments may move on either UPS or third-party aircraft, providing the ultimate in flexibility.

By combining the capabilities of the world’s 9th largest airline with UPS’s position as a global freight forwarder with access to other airlines, UPS becomes the only transportation and supply chain provider offering guaranteed integrated air freight services in a single portfolio. And from an operational standpoint, UPS is introducing automatic online day-specific scheduling for customers whose freight shipments are moving on third-party aircraft. This level of predictability has been an important missing link in the air freight forwarding market.

Moreover, the new freight portfolio represents another step in UPS’s drive to offer customers a complete range of U.S. domestic and international package and freight shipping options along with supply chain and logistics services, all available worldwide from one trusted source.
